Grundlagen der Informatik I - ©AIFB 2008 KIT – die Kooperation von Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH und Universität Karlsruhe (TH) 2 How will the world look five years from now ? Trends towards 2029: Computing will be more mobile (PDAs) and more ubiquitous We will have first examples of internet of services and first applications will run in the cloud (Mail, Calendar, Word, …) Information overload will be a more serious problem (people will drown in texts, videos, images, triples, …)

Grundlagen der Informatik I - ©AIFB 2008 KIT – die Kooperation von Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH und Universität Karlsruhe (TH) 3 Which set of major transformations can we expect from Semantic technologies? Semantic technologies will mature and become more pragmatic: Light-weight semantic applications will enter the market (e.g. RDF-based) The main purpose of ST will be data integration across service providers + contextualized service/information delivery and consumption Steps towards on-the-fly coordination of data and services Personalization / contextualiziation of data and services Integration of multimodal data (streams, multimedia, text, …) Services have to find their way to the consumer rather than the other way round Semantics for the Masses Semantics should emerge as a byproduct of daily work and collaboratively, thus usable in C2C-applications

Grundlagen der Informatik I - ©AIFB 2008 KIT – die Kooperation von Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH und Universität Karlsruhe (TH) 4 Which new application areas could emerge from fusion of Semantics with other technologies and sciences Computing everywhere: Semantic Technologies + Automotive: Intelligent Assistance in the Car Semantic Technologies + Sensor & Actor Networks: Augmented Reality Tackling global problems Semantic Technologies + Engineering: resource-aware and sustainable IT Semantic Technologies + Social sciences: information delivery to communities / developing countries / disconnected groups (sensitive to cultural background) Semantic Technologies + Demographic Change: eHealth, ambient assisted living
