Activity/ Templates Individually, take a couple of minutes to look over the provided templates. Draw an * around what you think the 3 most difficult questions will be. Box any terms that seem specific to the discipline Underline any parts that are confusing and have questions about. With a partner or in groups, compare your notes. Are the differences between assessments significant or superficial?

Your Cooperating Teacher and the EdTPA 1 Cooperating teacher knowledge of the EdTPA is secondary at best. You must sit down with them and explain what it requires. Plan for at least two hours. Things to discuss: -schedule: the best time to teach your lesson plan (after developing rapport with students, after substantial teaching practice) -assignments/evidence: teachers may have a different style not conducive to evidence needed for the EdTPA

Your Cooperating Teacher and the EdTPA 2 -curriculum changes that may occur between now and then. Things always change. This will affect your lesson plan, your evidence, your filming. Be flexible. -filming: most will be happy to help; get student permission from the class that you (1) connect with the best, and (2) will provide you the best evidence -ONE WEEK with ONE CLASS: The minimum you require from them (3 classes composing 250 minutes)

Your Cooperating Teacher and the EdTPA 3 Giving Up Control: the most common issue between your cooperating teacher and you. From your perspective: they’re not giving you class time, not letting you teach, woe is me. From their perspective: first priority is to students, student-teachers can muck up lesson plan design and delivery. They have their own way of doing things. So do you. This is universal. Be patient and learn to adapt- it is their classroom.

Tips for the Dual Endorsed (4) A split schedule may mean you won’t have a planning period with either one or both of your cooperating teachers. -This puts a burden… on you and on THEM (remember this!). -They have their own lives -Do your best to balance the needs of both teachers equally -They will try to accommodate you, but you must do the same.

Tips for the EdTPA Rubric Progressions - Each subject has a rubric progression that states what the graders are looking for Sign-up for the edtpa. You have a whole year to submit. Think about submitting early. Keep in mind page lengths.

Professional Certification (Pro-Cert) Three areas of focus: Effective Teaching, Professional Development, Teaching as a Career ProTeach Portfolio - Online Portfolio similar to EdTPA, submit artifacts, and write commentaries Professional Growth Plan - EdTPA allows for early assessment Effective teaching is most similar to EdTPA: instructional strategies, differentiated instruction, assessment variation etc. Professional development: Feedback, reflection, personal growth plan, staying current with content Teaching as a Career: Student diversity, collaborating for the benefit of the school, providing feedback For each entry they will need to submit two different types of artifacts for evidence. Evidence can not be videos or audio submissions!!

National Boards National Board’s Five Core Propositions for teaching: Proposition 1: Teachers Are Committed to Students and Their Learning Proposition 2: Teachers Know the Subjects They Teach and How to Teach Those Subjects to Students Proposition 3: Teachers Are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning Proposition 4: Teachers Think Systematically About Their Practice and Learn from Experience Proposition 5: Teachers Are Members of Learning Communities

National Boards: Components 1&2 Information and instructions for every component for all 25 content areas is here: http://www.boardcertifiedteachers.org/certificate-areas Content Knowledge is a computer-based assessment requiring candidates to demonstrate knowledge of and pedagogical practices for their teaching content area. Differentiating instruction: This portfolio entry provides you with the opportunity to highlight your ability to evaluate learning strengths and needs for individual students. Completed Contextual Information Sheet that describes the broader context in which you teach Written Commentary that analyzes four responses from two students. These students might be members of the same class or might be drawn from two different classes that you teach. Student work samples One student’s responses to four assignments/prompts Four assignments/prompts Need to include four rubrics or scoring criteria used for the samples.

National Boards: Component 3 This portfolio entry captures details about your instructional planning, direct evidence of your practice from two video recordings and instructional materials, and your analysis of and reflection on your teaching as displayed in two video recordings. You submit two 10–15 minute videos of your teaching practice, showcasing different instructional units, content, and strategies in each. You describe your instructional planning for the lesson featured in each video and submit appropriate supporting materials. You submit a commentary for each video that includes analysis and reflection on your teaching practice; that communicates your pedagogical decision making before, during, and after the lesson shown in the video; and that focuses on your impact on student learning. Similar to task 2 of the edTPA however the videos you will submit are longer.

National Boards: Component 4 Effective and Reflective Practitioner: You will gather information from a variety of sources about a group of students; use assessments to effectively plan for and positively impact your students’ learning; and provide evidence of your collaboration with families and caregivers, the community, and colleagues and of your contributions to learning communities to advance students’ learning and growth. Select one group of students as the focus for both the Knowledge of Students and the Generation and Use of Assessment Data sections of this portfolio entry. Select two assessments—one formative and one summative—to use in this portfolio entry. Written commentary on your practice of gathering and using information about students and how you contribute to positive changes for students. Similar to Task 3 on the edTPA, but you need to include both a formative and a summative assessment.

National Boards: Financial Incentives Washington State provides an annual base bonus of $5,000 to all eligible K-12 public school NBCTs. Teachers in qualifying challenging schools are eligible to receive an additional bonus up to $5,000 based on the teacher’s percentage of time spent at the qualifying challenging school.
