It is the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education. Financial incentive (North Carolina) Placement on Salary Schedule 12% above Base Pay

5 Component 1- Constructed Response (30 minutes per response)
Exercise 1: School Counseling Program Demonstrate your knowledge of the development, implementation and management of a school counseling program. Exercise 2: Counseling Theories and Techniques Demonstrate your knowledge of counseling theories and techniques as applied to a given scenario. Exercise 3: School Climate Demonstrate your understanding of factors related to school climate and approaches for establishing and maintaining a positive and productive learning environment. Tip: Practice the Sample Exercises provided by National Boards

6 Component 2 - Differentiation in Instruction
This component provides you with the opportunity to highlight your ability to evaluate learning strengths and needs for individual students; plan and implement appropriate differentiated instruction for those students; and analyze and modify instructional strategies and materials based on ongoing assessment. 15%

7 Component 2 - Differentiation in Instruction
Identify Small Group Members Critical Social / Emotional Need at Your School Related Data Collaboration in order to learn about group members Structured activity that includes a work product Common objective and set of directions but directions should allow for differentiation in product development and should provide evidence of differentiation. Deliver small group with differentiation for strengths and needs of group members

9 Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment
This component captures details about your instructional planning, direct evidence of your practice from two video recordings and instructional materials, and your analysis of and reflection on your delivery of school counseling as displayed in two video recordings. You will be evaluated on the demonstrated evidence of your practice and analysis as it relates to instruction, student engagement, and the learning environment. Two different instructional formats (small group, classroom guidance, individual counseling) Two lessons from different instructional units (examples: Career Awareness, Managing Feelings, Study Skills) 30%

10 Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment
Learning goals and instructional planning appropriate to students, context and content Demonstrate school counseling strategies that you use to meet learning goals Provide analysis of student’s growth and development as individuals who can interact effectively with you and each other in varied contexts to engage in meaningful academic, career, and/or social/emotional learning. Explain how the entire entry, taken together, is indicative of your delivery of school counseling content.

12 Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner
This component provides you with the opportunity to highlight your abilities as an effective and reflective practitioner in developing and applying your knowledge of your students. You will gather information from a variety of sources about a group of students; use assessments to effectively plan for and positively impact your students’ learning; and provide evidence of your collaboration with families and caregivers, the community, and colleagues and of your contributions to learning communities to advance students’ learning and growth. 15%

13 Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner
Knowledge of Students / Generation and Use of Assessment Data Participation in Learning Communities Use information from multiple data sources (at least two being family members, colleagues, professionals and / or community members) + knowledge of students + knowledge of sound assessment principles to… Guide assessment practices to… Guide what you do with students School Counselor as a learner - School Counselor as an advocate / collaborator leader Need for professional learning by yourself / colleagues identified based on your knowledge of students Participation in Learning Community Impact on Students

14 Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner
Terms: Group- A whole class, a small group or a group of students with whom you work who share similar characteristics Formative assessment- is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures conducted by counselors during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment Summative Assessment-refers to the assessment of participants where the focus is on the outcome of a program. Self Assessment- Must be part of either the formative or summative assessment.

21 General Notes Read through manual entirely- follow the directions given Plan ahead / be intentional Answer all of the questions asked Pick students / classes / groups that best lend themselves to the component’s objective. Be careful when getting advice from people who certified using the old standards
