Pre Production Roles

Writer Everything starts with the writer Gives everyone material to work with Needs to have: A goof command of language A strong sense of storytelling An understanding of genre and narrative structure An ability to create a world for an audience An ability to make the audience feel something Knowledge of the area they are writing about

Casting Director The person responsible for casting the production Must have: A good understanding of drama as an art form A good understanding of acting A wide range of contacts Good networking capabilities An ability to recognise talent

Location Scout Their role is to find suitable filming locations for the production They need to check: Whether special permission is needed to use the location Whether there is power available Whether the natural lighting is suitable Whether there will be enough space Whether neighbours will be a problem Must also have the following: A creative eye for landscape Good geographical knowledge Good organisational skills Good communication skills

Production Designer Responsible for creating the overall look of the film Works on sets and props Often supervises costume, hair, makeup Needs to have: A good knowledge of Art and Design Good general knowledge of the setting or time period of a film An eye for visual detail

Costume Designer Responsible for designing, creating, hire and purchasing of costumes When designing they must consider: Character personality and clothing choice Setting and time period Variety between scenes – but still maintaining the overall theme They need to have: Good design skills Knowledge of textiles Creative ability Good general knowledge of the history of design Good problem solving skills
