Introduction (1) The goal of TC TISPAN for IPTV is to provide solutions for fixed lines operators, and for mobility of the user and switch to different access technologies. ETSI via a specific agreement signed with DVB Project publishes DVB deliverables following approval by JTC Broadcast The goal of the DVB IPTV deliverables is to specify technologies on the interface between a managed IP network and retail receivers, enabling the end user to buy a DVB-IPTV receiver in any shop, take it home, connect it to a broadband network, choose and consume DVB services available over the IP network. DVB’s interactive middleware specifications, DVB-MHP and GEM, also include IPTV profiles.

Introduction (2) TC-Media Content Distribution (MCD) is the ETSI technical body in charge of guiding and coordinating standardization work aiming the successful overall development of multimedia systems (television and communication) responding to the present and future market requests on media content distribution.      TC MCD is addressing the domain of interoperability of content distribution and the related services in a converged environment supporting IPTV, Mobile TV and broadcast TV.

Current activities – TC TISPAN Content Distribution Network (CDN) architecture and protocol specification CDN interconnection architecture IPTV Release 3 set complete (architecture, protocols, security, interoperability tests)

Recent and current activities – JTC Broadcast Publication of a new version of Globally Executable MHP (GEM) for hybrid (TS 102 728) Adding Over The Top (OTT) and Hybrid Broadband Broadcast targets to existing specification Publication of Part 5 of DVB IPTV Guidelines (TS 102 542-5) Part 5 deals with Content Download Service (CDS) Current work on the update of clause on Service Discovery in DVB IPTV specification (TS 102 034) This clause will include updates on Service Discovery & Selection (SD&S) for IPTV

Recent and current activities TC MCD Published Technical Reports on Programme Guide Information distribution Subtitles distribution 3D gaming graphics delivery Audience measurement 3D gaming graphics delivery protocol specification (TS 102 938) based on conclusion of TR Analysis for CA/DRM interoperable solutions (TR 101 532) Content Delivery Network (CDN) CDN Infrastructure (TR 102 688-9) CDN Interconnection, use cases and requirements (TS 102 900)

Strategic directions – TISPAN Analyse the relation between CDN and information centric networks Improve Resilience, Scalability and Flexibility of IPTV solutions

Strategic direction – MCD Complement other ETSI activities in the field also from the Content Providers prospective TC MCD is in contact with other relevant bodies within and outside ETSI, and try to foster a modular and harmonized standardization environment aiming to coordinate efforts and prevent duplication of activities.

Challenges The changing business model from traditional broadcast to internet/IPTV based distribution The income for the content generators to be secured also in the future Gathering inputs from all parties involved in the new value chain

Next steps & actions - TISPAN Finish the protocols of a CDN CDN interconnection architecture Study migration of CDN to information centric networks

Next steps & actions - Broadcast Major revision of DVB IPTV specification (ETSI TS 102 034) needed in 2012: To include functionalities such as Fast Channel Change (FCC) and Service Discovery & Selection (SD&S) To adapt IPTV, based currently on IPv4, to IPv6 DVB looking at unmanaged IP networks and hybrid (broadcast/broadband/internet) systems which may lead to new ETSI deliverables. Investigate technology options to deliver DVB type content over the Internet to a large number of CE devices (includes game consoles), PCs or mobile devices

Next steps & actions - MCD Going from the start up to full steam mode Involve more participation from non traditional standard contributors such as traditional CDN providers MCD’s ambition is to consolidate its positioning as an active forum where all players in the value chain can come and contribute
