External Standards Level 1 Assessment specifications 20 pages maximum Recommended A3, A4 visual diaries or A3 No clear files No lamination No models No extra packaging Original work

Contexts Spatial – architectural, interior, landscape Product design- fashion, packaging, media products, technological/engineering When sending externals need to identify design topic or context Context – design brief, title statement, one sentence statement

AS 91063 (1.30) 3 credits external Produce freehand sketches that communicate design ideas Explore communicate own design ideas Visually convey design thinking Do not have to be of presentation standard 2D and 3D sketches Functional and aesthetic details

Assessment Achieved – communicate design ideas: describing in terms of form, shape, function Merit –clearly communicate: proportion, detailed information – construction, structure, function, aesthetics Excellence – effectively communicate: in-depth visual information about design features – exploded, sectional, sequential views

2D and 3D Techniques Could be: Isometric, perspective, oblique, planometric no instruments Techniques – quick rendering, crating, use of line hierarchy

Design Brief Students must generate design ideas to a design brief with specifications that allow students to develop both aesthetic and functional specificaitons

Successful product design reveals useful functionality beyond its appealing form. No matter how excellent a design looks like, most customers aren’t likely to spend money on something they won’t be able to use. On the other hand, most people are likely to buy something useful despite the design it has. ability to combine both beautiful design and functionality making it obvious to the customers how the product can be used and which benefits it delivers. (Vitaly Friedman)

Activity: Freehand sketching Develop a new design for a craft knife that is comfortable to hold and has a contemporary appearance.

2D sketches Do they describe design features? I have used 2B and 4B pencils, Ice Grey 10% and 30% markers, Warm Grey 30% marker and some color markers.

3D sketches Do they show form, shape and function?

Is this evidence for a merit? Is it excellence, in-depth? Construction? Structure? Knife Sketches Here I was exploring different concepts, form and sketching mediums for various utility knife designs. Pen and ink outlines Marker overall form Colored pencil highlights and shading Finished in Photoshop http://dinokasvikis.com/portfolio.html Aesthetics? Function?
