Discussion point

Animals eat them and die

Discussion How do plastic bags harm the environment? Landscape Animals Pollution What can we do to stop the damage caused by plastic bags?

Alternatives. Cotton bags……last longer…… Alternatives? Cotton bags……last longer…….biodegradable saves using petroleum kinder to the environment….etc etc

Another Eco-Friendly material is JUTE

WVO WASTE VEGETABLE OIL AN ALTERNATIVE TO PETROLEUM WVO = Oil that restaurants have used to cook food, like French fries, and this is then thrown away. It is already available! Over 11 billions produced in 2000 Restaurants are happy to give it away because they usually have to pay to dispose ot it IT IS CHEAP AND EASY TO USE!

WVO STEPS 1. Fast-food restaurant produces WVO 2. WVO is collected It is changed into fuel People use fuel to power cars, trucks etc. Look at picture on page 89 of Academic Connections book.

WVO IS A SIMPLE AND GREEN ALTERNATIVE TO PETROLUEM It is easy to use. The oil is cleaned You have to buy a new part for your car You can get it from restaurants for FREE It does not pollute the environment!

Discussion Point What HARM DOES PLASTIC BAGS DO TO ANIMALS BOTH ON LAND AND IN THE SEA? HOW DO THEY SPOIL OUR LANDSCAPES? WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP THE USE OF PLASTIC BAGS? SHOULD SHOPS BE BANNED FROM USING THEM

Discussion point What are bio-fuels? What are they made from Name four What is WVO? Name three reasons why it is a good alternative to using petrol in our cars Why are bio-fuels a good alternative to fossil fuels, like crude oil (petroleum)

Bio-fuels are made from vegetables such as….

Also…..Soya beans

Sugarcane! Renewable, safe, biodegradable Alternatives to petroleum

BIO -FUELS ARE BIO DEGRADABLE THEY DO NOT POLLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT IF THEY GET ONLAND OR WATER THEY ARE EASIER AND LESS EXPENSIVE TO CLEAN UP WHEN PRODUCED AND BURNED THEY CAUSE LESS POLLUTION THAN PETROEUM OTHER SOURCES OF NATURAL ENERGY INCLUDE WIND, AIR, AND SUN (SOLAR) ENERGY. ALL ARE ALTERNATIVES TO FOSSIL FUELS THEY ARE ALL RENEWABLE (THAT IS THEY ARE ABLE TO BE REPRODUCED NATURALLY IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME0

Reasons for making bio-fuels PROBLEMS Petroleum is toxic People want clean and safe products People worry about dangerous chemicals Fossil fuels pollute the air when burned Chemical products are dangerous for our health People depend too much on petroleum which is harmful and NONRENEWABLE

SOLUTIONS Use safe and renewable sources of energy such as? (make a list) Bio-fuels are clean and safe

Problems with bio-fuels Rainforests are destroyed in order to grow more vegetables for bio-fuels Farmers grow less vegetables for food and vegetables therefore become more expensive We need a lot more land to grow vegetables on………..which we do not always have
