Year 11 mocks English Language Paper 1 – 1 hour and 45 minutes You will take two papers during the mock period: English Language Paper 1 – 1 hour and 45 minutes Part A will test your ability to analyse an extract of fiction through 4 questions (1 hour) Part B will test your creative writing skills (45 minutes) 2) English Literature Paper 1 – 1 hour and 45 minutes Part A will give you an extract from Macbeth and ask you to write an essay. There are 4 additional marks to be gained for accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. Part B will give you an extract from the 19th Century novel you have been studying and ask you to write an essay Both of these papers are worth just under 50% of your GCSEs. It is essential that you revise thoroughly for both so that your teacher can give you an accurate predicted grade for college.

How do I revise? Your teacher will revise essay writing skills with you in class. It is essential that you revise content (quotes, subject terminology, context, key characters ) at home You can use: Your class books and annotated copied of the novel/plays Revision guides Online resources such as BBC Bitesize, York Notes, Spark Notes YouTube revision videos such as ‘Mr Bruff’ Your subject teacher will give you an example Language revision paper to remind you of the question styles

In the days before your exam, you will go to the hall and sit a practice Language paper You will be ‘walked’ and ‘talked’ through how to answer the paper by a member of the English department Why are they helpful? It makes sure the paper is fresh in your mind before the exam You have a last chance to ask any questions before the exam You teachers can give you hand exam tips and check your work one last time Of the 40 students that attended the Saturday WTM in May 2017, 93% of students got a level 5 or above What do you need to bring? A pen that you find comfortable to write with A highlighter or coloured pen for annotations
