WESTERN STATES Tripartite JULY 2017 Health & Safety Update WESTERN STATES Tripartite JULY 2017

Safety UPDATE RECENT INJURIES SAFETY CULTURE HUMAN PERFORMANCE DISASTER RELIEF FUND

RECENT INJURIES WE STILL AVERAGE 1 FALL FATALITY A YEAR Falls — 364 out of 937 total deaths in construction in 2015 (38.8%), OSHA data.

EYE INJURIES EYE INJURIES ARE 33% OF OUR TOTAL INJURIES. Eye injuries on the job are not uncommon. In 2012, 20,300 eye injuries involving days away from work occurred, according to the National Safety Council. (Safety & Health Magazine, 2/16)

EYE INJURIES How do we lower the amount of eye injuries? First, we must insure that everyone is given the proper eyewear for the task and they are trained to properly use the eyewear. Safety glasses worn under the welding hood?

EYE INJURIES How do we lower the amount of eye injuries? First, we must insure that everyone is given the proper eyewear for the task and they are trained to properly use the eyewear. Safety glasses worn under the welding hood? Second, report eye problems immediately. Particles in the eye are covered by healing tissue within minutes and then require the particle to be “drilled out”

Safety culture Every jobsite has a safety culture. Positive and negative.

Safety culture Every jobsite has a safety culture. Positive and negative. What kind of safety culture have you seen?

Safety culture Every jobsite has a safety culture. Positive and negative. What kind of culture have you seen? Not just on the job, but also at the training centers. We must do our part as leaders to instill a positive, proactive safety culture in our members. This in turn helps everyone succeed.

Safety culture Boilermakers say “ We do the job right the first time”. We need to do safety the same way.

Human Performance What is Human Performance? Behaviors + Results =Human Performance The way we think and the way our brain operates effects our actions.

Human Performance The Boilermaker CODE comes to mind when I think about Human Performance. Our past and present behaviors effect our everyday lives on and off the job.

Human Performance tools Tools of human performance: “Two-minute rule” taking a few minutes to fully think out your actions “Procedure use and adherence” understand and follow proven procedures “Place keeping” where were you when you stopped the task? “Self-checking” is what you are doing correct? “STOP when unsure” stop and ask questions, don’t assume “Peer checking/Intervention” is what my coworkers doing correct? “Three-way communication” Is everyone on the same page

Human Performance Human Performance is something the owners, contractors, and Boilermakers are looking into. MOST and BNAP are both looking into adding it into their current programs.

Disaster relief fund The very nature of unionism is that members help each other. A loss to one is an loss to all — whether the loss comes from a tornado, wildfire, flooding, or a category 4 hurricane.

Disaster relief fund The Disaster Relief fund has helped members from Canada to South Louisiana. The fund helps our members get back on their feet. Due to recent flooding and severe storms, the fund has been hit hard. We are always accepting donations and are currently working on a website to accept online donations.

Safety Support I am always happy to visit projects and assist with safety walks and concerns. Call me anytime you need safety assistance: Mark Garrett 225-276-6796 mgarrett@boilermakers.org THANK YOU!
