Power Standards Through Technology Tracie Gomez, Sendera Ranch Ted Twa, Seven Hills

What is a power standard? The term power standards refers to a subset of learning standards that educators have determined to be the highest priority or most important for students to learn. These are identified at the state level, as well as the district level. All subject areas have power standards.

Why use technology? Adding New Meaning to Student Projects Students enjoy finding meaning to their work. While in the past they could create reports and projects that would be viewed only by their teacher and fellow students, their work can now be easily displayed online. They can create materials to be used by other students and get feedback on their ideas from students in other schools all over the world. This will help students take pride in their work and find meaning in their assignments.

Student Collaboration Opportunities Students can collaborate on projects with students from around the world. They can work with students from the school across the street or across the country. There is a full range of technology, such as the recent popularity in cloud technology, which will allow the students to speak and work together with ease without ever meeting in person.

E-Portfolios Also, in NISD each student is given a Google Doc portfolio. Work from each school year can be housed in this global format. Student work samples can be accessed through any internet ready device.

Lead 4Ward Lead 4Ward Focus Areas: Learning – about the changes (what is known and what is anticipated) Energizing – educators to embrace the challenges of the new requirements Acting – in ways that support the systems and structures necessary to achieve success Developing – tools, strategies and plans to coordinate instruction, curriculum, assessment and accountability Use this app to help identify power standards, as well as a variety of other helpful data tools. Download the app now. Spend a few minutes navigating around your grade level or content area.

Readiness vs. Supporting Standard Readiness standards have the following characteristics. They are essential for success in the current grade or course. They are important for preparedness for the next grade or course. They support college and career readiness. They necessitate in-depth instruction. They address broad and deep ideas. Supporting standards have the following characteristics. Although introduced in the current grade or course, they may be emphasized in a subsequent year. Although reinforced in the current grade or course, they may be emphasized in a previous year. They play a role in preparing students for the next grade or course but not a central role. They address more narrowly defined ideas.

Weebly A internet based web-page designer. Students are able to design and create their own website based on researched data. Students are allowed to use templates or free design. Teachers set up an account and then creates student accounts.

Science TEK 5.7C: The student will identify alternative energy resources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biofuels. 4.7C Identify and classify the Earth’s renewable resources including air, plants, water, and animals, and nonrenewable resources including coal, oil, natural gas; and the importance of conservation. 3.7D explore the characteristics of natural resources that make them useful in products and materials such as clothing and furniture and how resources may be conserved 1.7C gather evidence of how rocks, soil, and water help to make useful products K.7C give examples of ways rocks, soil, and water are useful
