The 6th edition of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition KAM Bratislava 2017

It is a comfort to know that new generations of competent lawyers are interested in pursuing a career in the field of human rights as this is a precondition for the effective protection and implementation of fundamental rights and freedoms. Robert Spano, judge at the European Court of Human Rights

A unique opportunity for students to experience the principles and implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights firsthand.

FACT 1: EHRMCC is a simulation of the European Court of Human Rights concerning the violation of the European Convention on Human Rights

EHRMCC is organised together with the Council of Europe FACT 2: EHRMCC is organised together with the Council of Europe

EHRMCC is one of the biggest competitions organised by ELSA FACT 3: EHRMCC is one of the biggest competitions organised by ELSA

EHRMCC is the only human rights moot court competition held in English FACT 4: EHRMCC is the only human rights moot court competition held in English

Teams A team must consist of 2 – 4 law students Only students who have not previously participated in the final, can take part in the competition Only students can be team members, however, each team can have up to two Team Coaches Only one team per university is allowed to participate, as the teams will represent their university in the Final

Structure of the Competition 1) The competition is divided into two principle rounds: Written Round Final Round (No Regional Rounds for now) 2) ELSA Groups are allowed to organize a National Round (does not function as a selection round)

Applicant and respondent Written Round No limit to teams Applicant and respondent Scoring Selection of 20 teams A selection round – selecting 20 teams for the Final Round in Strasbourg All teams have to submit Written Submissions for applicant and respondent. The total score of the Written Submission determines the teams ranking in the competition The Written Submissions shall be sent to the ELSA International which then distributes the documents to the selected judges for scoring No limit on how many teams can participate in the Written Round

HANNAH AND YGRITTE OLARIA v. ARGOLAND 1. Ms Hannah Olaria is a citizen of Argoland who was born in 1980 and lives in Leti, the capital of Argoland. She belongs to the Argoland Reformist Church, a relatively new minority Christian denomination in Argoland. On 20 July 2015 Ms Olaria gave birth to a baby girl, Ygritte. On 30 July 2015 Ygritte was officially admitted to the Argoland Reformist Church after following the prescribed initiation rites. 2. Under the national law of Argoland new-born babies are subject to a series of seven compulsory vaccines, including polio, diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B. Ms Olaria refused to vaccinate her child on the ground of her personal and religious beliefs.
