In the Middle East, Islamic fundamentalism is a movement that emphasizes a return to the traditional beliefs and values of Islam. Ayatollahs

Islamic fundamentalists believe that Western culture directly conflicts with traditional (Islamic) culture.

Since the 1970s, the conflict between Western culture and traditional culture has resulted in the growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East.

U.S. President Jimmy Carter with Pahlavi For example, before the 1970s, Iran and their leader, Shah Reza Pahlavi, embraced Western culture and nations. U.S. President Jimmy Carter with Pahlavi

This caused the Iranian Revolution in 1979, led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, . . .

. . . which resulted in the shah fleeing Iran and the government of Iran being overthrown by Islamic fundamentalists.

Following the Iranian Revolution, Khomeini established an Islamic republic in Iran.

Today, the Islamic republic of Iran is still in existence and extremely hostile toward Western nations.
