21st Century Technology: 21st Century Classroom

Using Blended Learning with Khan Academy Why Blend? Joins the best aspects of face to face and online instruction Classroom time can be used to engage students in advanced interactive activities Online time can address individual student needs Khan Academy allows for blended learning to take place in the classroom

Teacher-Centered Instruction Traditional style of teaching is NOT student-centered; teacher has power, students are passive learners; SAGE ON STAGE

Student-Centered Instruction Blended learning makes student-centered instruction possible; students have power and are active learners; teacher is GUIDE ON THE SIDE

Student-Centered Learning Empowers students to... Take ownership over their own learning by driving their own progress Fill in gaps and prevent new ones by moving in a mastery-based progression Build strong math foundations Be challenged Allows teachers and coaches to... Give personalized attention based on student need Benefits of student-centered learning

Empowering teachers with DATA Teachers and coaches can... Access all of their students' data See a class progress summary as a whole or dive into a particular student's profile to figure out exactly which topics are problematic or which skills are already mastered Identify struggling students to immediately help them Identify advanced students and provide challenges Glance at their class profile dashboard and quickly figure out how to best spend their time teaching Data empowers coaches; Khan Academy provides coaches with data for data-driven instruction

A Tour of What Khan Academy provides

What KA provides: Practice Exercises Videos Hints Recommendations Assessments Challenges Incentives Goals Personal Data What Khan Academy provides

Khan Academy Exercises Exercises have hints and videos for help and support; students get immediate feedback; practice for mastery

Khan Academy Videos Videos are available to help students with exercises; explains the concepts in greater detail

Data-driven instruction With just a glance, teachers and coaches can see how students are doing on a particular topic; coaches can identify struggling students, practicing students, and the levels of mastery. Coaches can use this information to provide direct help and assistance

will be used in our classroom How will be used in our classroom introduction to what Khan Academy is

Khan Academy is one instructional tool in comprehensive learning; it’s one piece of the comprehensive instructional pie

How we will use Khan Academy in our class During regular math classes: Whole class - once a week in the resource room Small groups - in the classroom for advanced, struggling or absent students. At home: homework assigments (videos/skill practicing) What for: Math instruction, skill practice, skill mastery, skill review, filling math “holes”, challenges. Technology: resource room 1:1 , classroom – 3 computers Let parents know how Khan Academy will be used in the classroom (CUSTOMIZE TO YOUR CLASSROOM’S USAGE).
