WHY ARE WE HERE? Purpose of Seminars Introduction to Course Selection Purpose of College & Career Center Tips for Sophomore Year Explore Naviance - Beginning the College Search Complete the College and Career Planning Survey

Course Selection Begins the week of November 6th Same format as last year Choosing Electives (see course selection worksheet) Explore the Curriculum Guide for course descriptions Talk to your teachers about recommendations for electives To access the Curriculum Guide… Visit www.d121.org Hover over Academics, click Academic Resources Click Curriculum Guide

Course Selection Explore your interests … what career are you interested in? (Business? Art? Graphic Design? Medical field? Education? Skilled Trades?) Foreign language? If college-bound, consider taking 2 years minimum of the same foreign language. Level Changes? Are you happy with the academic level you are at? Are you challenged in your courses? Would you like to move up or down? Begin to have conversations now with your teacher if considering a level change.

Lake County High Schools Technology Campus Goal: Prepare students with the technological and workplace skills required for success in business and industry. You will engage in authentic problems and real world projects both with teachers and resources outside of the classroom. Many of the Tech Campus programs can qualify you for college credit (dual credit) with the College of Lake County, McHenry County College and other community colleges and technical schools. Tech Campus will be visiting the O’Plaine Campus October 26 this semester to discuss their programs during all lunch-study hall periods.

Tech Campus Programs Transportation Programs Automotive Service Tour of Tech (Open House @ Tech Campus) for future students & their families Thursday, January 11th from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Transportation Programs Automotive Service Automotive Collision Repair Manufacturing/Industrial Programs Construction Skills and Management Welding/Fabrication Computer Support Services PLTW Pathway to Engineering Communication Programs: Game Programming/App Development & 3D Gaming Laser Technology Multimedia Design Robotics & Automation Human Services Programs: Certified Nursing Assisting Medical Assisting Fire Fighting Emergency Medical Services Culinary Arts Cosmetology Criminal Justice Law Enforcement & CSI Early Education & Teaching *These programs are typically offered in three different sessions throughout the school day. Depending on the program, you would only be able to take English, Math, Social Studies, PE, and Lunch at WTHS during your junior year. *Please keep this in mind if your are planning to attend a 4 year college or university at some point after high school.

Why Come to the College & Career Center? Not sure of what career you would like to do? Stop in to do a career assessment! Not sure where to begin college search process? Attend career, scholarship, college workshops Learn how to search for scholarships even now! Talk about summer programs, becoming a college athlete Curious about college costs and how to afford college? After seminars are complete, the CCC is typically open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during 3A, 4B, 5A or 6B. Make sure to check your texts for the daily schedule!

What should I be doing as a sophomore to prepare for life after high school? Do the BEST you can in all classes and tests each semester Challenge yourself by taking as rigorous of classes appropriate for you GET INVOLVED! Clubs, sports, activities and volunteer opportunities can boost your resume for colleges and scholarships. Find your passion and dive in! Can be at WTHS or in the community If possible, consider getting a part-time job Helps build time management, responsibilities and organizational skills Start exploring college and career information websites (Naviance, College Board (Big Futures), Career Cruising Research college admission requirements on university admission webpages (i.e. classes required, GPA, test scores needed, etc…) Talk to your parents/guardian about how much your family can afford for college Complete Net Price Calculators on university websites or visit www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov
