1 College Planning Workshop Day 2

2 Review from Yesterday’s Lesson
Discussed various paths you can take after high school (military, trade school, employment, community college, 4 year college) For students interested in community college, we reviewed the process for RCGC For students interested in 4 year colleges, we discussed various criteria that you need to consider to help find the right fit. Today’s focus: College Application Process and Using Naviance to identify schools that meet your preferences!

3 Application Process: Get Ready to Apply! pg 47-54
Develop an Activity Resume (pg. 50) Write your essays! (pg ) Ask for letters of recommendation must use WDHS’s letter of recommendation form, available in Naviance document library or the Guidance Office

4 APPLY  Online at college’s website OR Common App
Send SAT and/or ACT scores from testing service Use Naviance to manage your college applications ALL college applications must be logged into Naviance Update your applications in Naviance to indicate when you’ve applied so your counselor can send your transcript and supporting materials Remember, RCGC process is different!

5 College Application Process RCGC vs. 4 Year Colleges
Rowan College at Glo. Co. Attend RCGC assembly at WDHS in October / November of 12th grade Apply online (“Priority Admissions”) before Christmas Break No application fee Take Placement Test Here at WDHS in Feb. (if not Exempt due to high enough SAT/ACT scores) Highly Recommend taking the SAT or ACT even though not required 4 Year College or University Complete the Application (almost always on-line) Pay Application Fee ($40 - $75) Send SAT/ACT scores Write Essay Complete Letter of Rec Request Form and Request Letters Update your Activity Resume GOAL: Have everything completed by Thanksgiving!

Senior Year Timeline (pg 79) TIP  Post these timelines on your refrigerator to help keep you on track!

9 Next Steps….. Course Selection for Senior Year
February Be sure to take at least 4 academic classes if you plan to go to a 4 year school Individual Conferences with counselor to discuss your specific goals & plans April / May Schedule college visits for the Spring Schedule your SAT or ACTs (Dates are on handout)

10 Naviance Activity: “Super Match” College Search
On WDHS homepage, use the student drop down and select Naviance ( Enter YOUR Student ID# Enter the word password Click on “Remember Me” Click “Log In”

11 SuperMatch  Click on Colleges Tab at top left
Under “college research” click “SuperMatch college search” Work your way through the orange tabs on the left Find which colleges are a good fit for YOU!!!!! Remember chart on pg. 37 (“Safety”, “Realistic”, “Reach”)
