Altered Books

An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning. There are endless ways to do this project! Here are some things to consider:

Highlight words Mask out sections with solid colour or pattern to highlight key phrases or words

Maybe write a poem….

Cut outs or folding Transform your book by folding or cutting out the pages

Pop up Create elements that pop out of the page

Place drawings on top of the text Place drawings over top of the text leaving the white space as a way to showcase the text

Use a variety of layered media Layer paint, ink, pastel and any other media to achieve depth and interest in a image

Line Line and pattern can be very effective and yet simple to do!

Practice your typography Investigate an interesting font style or create your own

Consider alternate media

Don’t forget to transform the outside!

Or the Cover! Give someone a reason to open your book

About you Include one page in your book that says something about you Ensure you have both text and images Be creative If you need more inspiration and ideas google “altered books”
