Treating: Bacterial Diseases 1. Illnesses caused by bacteria can be treated by using antibiotics. 2. Antibiotics are made naturally by some bacteria or fungi. Example- Penicillin works by weakening the cell walls of some bacteria and causing the cells to burst.

Penicillium 3. In 1928, Fleming was creating an experiment with fungus. When he came home from vacation, he found that the fungus had eaten all the bacteria. He discovered Penicillium! 4. We now use it to treat bacteria infections.

Bacteria Diseases Unfortunately, antibiotics are less effective today than they once were. 5. Some bacteria has become resistant to antibiotics, called antibiotic resistance, allows some bacteria to still live.

Treating: Viral Diseases 7. There are no medicines to cure viral infections. Antibiotics will not treat diseases caused by viruses. 8. Over the counter medications will help relieve some of the symptoms of a viral infection, but it will not cure it.

Viral Diseases Over the counter medications can actually extend your illness. 9. The best cure for viral diseases are: rest, drink lots of fluids, and eat a well-balanced meal.

Prevention! 11. Active immunity is when the body has produced the antibodies that fight the disease pathogens. 12. A person acquires active immunity when their own immune system produces antibodies in response to the presence of a pathogen.

Prevention 13. Immune response - the body gains immunity (recognition) of the disease and the T cells and B cells remember how to fight the disease. (chicken pox) 14. Vaccination - immunization, the process by which harmless antigens are introduced into a person’s body to gain immunity to certain diseases.

Prevention 15. Passive immunity - happens when antibodies are given to a person. A person gains passive immunity when the antibodies that fight the pathogen come from a source other than the person’s body. Example- a mother will pass on some immunities to her baby before the baby is born.
