Orogenesis “mountain building”

Mountains are > 300 m in height, and have a discernable summit and sloping sides.

Types of Mountains Volcanic Mountains form by the accumulation of lava flows and tephra. Ex. Mauna Kea or Kilauea on Hawaii

Kilauea

Types of Mountains Fold Mountains form by intense folding where plates collide. Ex. Himalayas, Urals, Rockies

Himalayas

Himalayas

Types of Mountains Fault-Block Mountains form by normal faults where the crust has been fractured by tensional stresses. Ex. Tetons of Wyoming, Sierra Nevada Range in California

Teton Range

Types of Mountains Unwarped Mountains form when a large area of the crust is pushed upward by forces from within the earth. the cause is not clear as they occur far from plate boundaries. Ex. Adirondack Mountains of New York
