NORMAL Fault formed by the stress of TENSION where plates were pulled apart. The Hanging Wall fell and the Footwall was raised

Northern Rocky Mountains were formed by a REVERSE fault. This occurred when plates were COMPRESSED or pushed together. The Hanging wall was pushed UP and the Footwall fell DOWN.

San Andres Fault formed on a Strike Slip Fault where the plates slid past each other (shearing). There is no Hanging or Footwalls here!!

Strike/Slip Fault

Anticlines and Synclines Folded Mountains Fault-block mountains Plateaus

Upward and Downward folds in rock. Found where compressed forces have folded the crust. Central Appalachian Mountains in PA

Collision of 2 plates can cause compression and folding of the crust. This produced some the Earth’s largest mountain ranges. The Himalayas and the Alps

Folded mountain range

Stretching the Earth’s Crust!! The Great Basin in Nevada. Many mountains separated by broad valleys. The Mountains formed from tension in Earth’s crust that causes faulting. Two plates move away from each other.

Large area of land elevated high above sea level that form when forces in Earth’s crust push up a large, flat boke of rock. Colorado Plateau
