Mountains

About Mountains A mountain is a huge landmass which rises more than 900m above the mean sea level. About half of the mountain surface should have steep slopes. The mountains are the highest are highest landforms and occupy about one-fourth of the total land area of the earth.

Fold Mountains Most of the mountain ranges of the world, such as Himalayas, the Alps, the Rockies ad the Andes are fold mountains. As these mountains are formed recently, they are also known as young fold mountains. On the other hand, the Aravallis were formed much earlier and are known as old fold mountains. Young fold mountains have conical peaks and old fold mountains have rounded peaks.

Block Mountains Block mountains are formed by the horizontal tensional forces which causes cracks or faults in the earth’s crust. These faults can break the crust into blocks. When these blocks are raised, block mountains are formed. The block mountains have flat tops and steep slopes examples for block mountains are the Vosges in France and the Sierra Nevada in California.

Volcanic Mountains Formation of a volcanic mountain is associated with volcanic activities. When a volcano erupts, hot magma is thrown out with great force. This magma accumulates around the vent of the volcano and generally forms a tall cone-shaped mountain known as volcanic mountain. Examples of volcanic mountains are the Kilimanjaro in Africa and the Cotopaxi in South America.
