Imperialism and the Causes of World War I M.A.I.N.

New Imperialism Imperialism spread more thoroughly through Africa The Scramble for Africa

Africa Before Imperialism

Africa During Imperialism

Damage New borders were created without any thought about original boarders. Groups who didn’t necessarily get along were forced together due to new borders. Stripped of natural resources Europeans thought they were superior and had little regard towards any of the Africans or Asians European countries set up puppet governments

Causes of WWI Militarism Alliances Imperialism Nationalism

The Balkans

Alliances Germany becomes a unified country in 1871 This concerned much of Europe causing France and Russia to form an alliance Feeling out-numbered, Germany then allied with Austria-Hungary England later allied with France and Russia in an attempt to balance power Triple Entente Italy sort of made a treaty with Germany and Austria-Hungary creating the Triple Alliance

Alliances France  Russia  England = The Triple Entente Germany  Austria-Hungary  Italy = The Triple Alliance

Militarism Each European country wanted to build up their militaries stronger than the others The countries keep increasing their militaries in response to each other creating an “Arms Race”

Nationalism Nationalism is the idea that your country is better in every way than any other country Root of the other three causes
