3 M.A.N.I.A.C. Militarism In the early 1900s there was a continual buildup of armies and navies. This arms race between countries increased tensions in Europe.

4 M.A.N.I.A.C. Alliances As national and imperial goals conflicted, two alliances (The Triple Entente (Allies) and the Central Powers) formed in an effort to maintain the balance of power between two groups of countries. If fighting were to break out, members of either alliance were pledged to help each other.

5 M.A.N.I.A.C. Nationalism Belief that all members of the same ethnic group should be unified under one government.

6 M.A.N.I.A.C. Imperialism Belief that stronger, more powerful nations (mostly European) should take over weaker, less developed ones (mostly in Africa and Asia).
