Our Program Each grade level receives: Cornerstone curriculum 45 minutes (one period) in the ELL classroom Small group help in their classroom Cornerstone curriculum Teaches social studies and science Every day we practice: Reading, writing, speaking, listening

Learning a New Language Social Language Comes first Learned from friends Takes 1 – 3 years Academic Language Takes longer to acquire Learned from science, math and social studies Takes 5 or more years

Home Language is Very Important! Speak your home language! The more your child understands in their first language, the easier it will be for them to learn a second language

How You Can Help… Speak your home language! Have conversations with your child as much as possible. Use big, challenging words. Read books together. Use the pictures. Talk about the story. Have your child tell the story to you.

Library / Adult ESL Classes Get a library card! You just need a license They have books in many languages – just ask the librarian Adult ESL classes are available for parents
