Even in our darkest moments, Americans have always had hope Even in our darkest moments, Americans have always had hope. By remembering our history, holding on to our values, and supporting each other, we have found the strength to face any struggle thrown our way.

What is a veteran? Veterans are people who have served in the military in times of war or peace.

Are there many Veterans? There are nearly 24 million Veterans living among us, in every state and territory and from every walk of life.

How did Veteran’s Day begin? “Veteran’s Day” was originally called “Armistice Day”. It became a holiday to commemorate the end of World War I in 1918.

How did Veteran’s Day begin? The armistice (peace treaty) to end World War I was signed at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. November 11 11:00 A.M.

How did Veteran’s Day begin? Armistice Day officially became Veteran’s Day after World War II. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation that November 11th would honor veterans of all wars, not just World War I. Although the name of the holiday and those it honors has changed, it remains the only national holiday that commemorates an exact moment in time – The Armistice that ended World War I.

What’s the Difference? Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Both holidays were established to recognize and honor the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. It was originally set aside as a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country.

What’s the difference? Those who died are remembered on Veteran’s Day, but is especially intended to honor all those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. Veteran’s Day is a time to thank living Veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.

How do we observe Veteran’s Day? At HCMS, we will learn about the etiquette for honoring our history, honoring our fellow citizens, and honoring our flag. In seventh grade, we will participate in a service project to honor veterans. We will connect with service members of our past and present.

How will this “Make a Difference”? We can all better value the freedoms we have today because of the men and women who have served in defense of our nation. We will show our appreciation to these citizens.

BE PROUD TO CALL YOURSELF AN AMERICAN. America is a land filled with courageous people. People who fight for what is right. People who don’t tolerate bullies. People who are there in times of crisis. And people who lend a hand. BE PROUD TO CALL YOURSELF AN AMERICAN. Help make this world, not just this country, a better place. There is not anyone too old or too young, too rich or too poor, to make a difference.

How do we honor those who have served?

Make a Promise!!! “I Promise” Complete the “I Promise” card from your teacher by making a serious and realistic commitment in honor of our Veterans.

For instance… To demonstrate good citizenship, you might make a promise like the ones listed. I promise… to say "Thank You" to a veteran. (relative or non-relative). Will you… Thank a friend or a relative? Make a phone call? Write a note? Make a visit?

Or…. I promise to fly the American flag on appropriate holidays. Do you…Own a flag? Know how to display a flag?

Or…. I promise to volunteer for an event or cause related to veterans. Is there….An event in the Frankfort area? An event your parents parents attend?

Or…. I promise to donate gently used items from my house to the Vietnam Veteran's or Purple Hearts.

Or…. I promise to participate or attend the band showcase on Veteran’s Day at HCMS. Do you… Know what time it starts? Know if the school needs volunteers?

Record you promise… Write a promise you can keep. Think about how and with whose help you can fulfill the promise. Print neatly and clearly. Sign your name. Return you card. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
