Now Let’s Practice: Evaluating Student Examples Working and groups, you will work together to break down a writing prompt and assess whether or not a student has successfully address the writing prompt questions. You will have 10 minutes to read the prompt and annotate the prompt. After annotating the prompt, you will be given an additional five minutes to read the student example. As a group you will discuss the writer’s strengths and weaknesses. As a group decide the score based on the rubric that you will assign to the writer. When the teacher says “SWITCH,” you will rotate to the next student example. At the end of all rotations, we will discuss each example.

Lesson Wrap Up: Exit Slip On the Post-It note placed on your desk, answer the following questions: Which student example reflects your type of writing? What changes might you need to make to ensure that you are addressing the prompt? You will have two minutes to respond and place your note on the classroom door.

Rhetorical Analysis: Group Introduction and 1st Body Students will write an AP rhetorical analysis essays based on the Queen Elizabeth speech from the multiple choice passage on the exam.   Students will individually annotate speech for rhetorical strategies and then discuss as a class. Divide speech into three chunks before annotating. Begin each body paragraph wit “In the first section,” “In the second section,” etc. Toss and Grab Thesis Statement Activity to write the thesis statement: Then write a three sentence introduction paragraph as a class. 3-2-1 Writing Essay 1. Write the first body paragraph as a whole group 2. Write the second body paragraph in a group of 2-4 3 Write the third body paragraph in pairs to turn in for a daily grade 4. Write the conclusion as a class.

Rhetorical Analysis: Drafting Using your annotate copy of “Superman and Me” and your clean copy of the Rhetorical Analysis Essay outline, choose your writing option. Begin drafting your essay. As you write, the teacher will call you to her desk to discuss the direction of your essay. By the end of class you should have a partial essay complete. Final draft will be due on next class meeting.
