Significance The candidates had different points of view on the war and Nixon winning the election of 1968 indicated that America was becoming more conservative even though it was a close call between him and Humphrey due to the impact of Wallace’s campaign.

Point 1: Democratic Convention Hubert Humphrey and Eugene McCarthy publicly supported LBJ’s Vietnam policies 10 thousand protesters gathered Tried to pressure Democrats to adopt anti-war policy Richard Daley Mayor of Chicago Told Police and national guard to break-up any riots or fights Riots Broke out between demonstrators and the Chicago Police Department Media captured the event “The Whole World is watching!”

Conclusion The Election of 1968 was one of importance. The first big component of the election was the Chicago Democratic Convention which turned into a huge riot between demonstrators and the Chicago police department. The convention still went on, however, and Humphrey became the democratic nominee. Richard Nixon won the election to become president, beating Humphrey by less than 1%. George Wallace also ran as a 3rd party nominee, but lost much of his popularity due to his running-mate, Curtis LeMay.
