3 Third Parties What effect have strong party candidates had on the Republican and Democratic parties? – They have pushed both towards the center on issues

4 Democratic Party 1964 Election Lyndon Johnson Promised to help the poor Supports Civil Rights Act of 1964 – Loses support in South George Wallace – conservative, anti-war, feeds of racial tensions, wins 30-40% of vote in South and elsewhere.
