GETTING STARTED Select a Topic Research Experiment Research the topic for background info. Exhibit Judging

Something you are interested in Books, Magazines, Internet Select a Topic Something you are interested in Books, Magazines, Internet

Research Encyclopedias Internet Books Experts in the field

Experiment Plan Perform Keep data

Fill out with information Research Paper Fill out with information Include data

Exhibit Display board Graphs, Charts, Pictures Neat and Colourful Inches grown Dates measured

STEPS IN THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

STEPS IN SCIENTIFIC METHOD Question Introduction Why are you interested. Hypothesis Control (to measure your results against) Materials Procedure/Method Results (must have graphs and tables) Conclusion/does it have practical implications? Variables/Fixed variables Future Tests Bibliography/Acknowledgments

Scientific question to be answered Problem Scientific question to be answered Should not be yes or no answer. Remember in science you prove or disprove.

Idea about the solution Can be based on research Hypothesis Idea about the solution Can be based on research

Control What can you control? Dependent Variable Keep one the same for your control to compare it to What is staying the same? Same pot, same kind of material, etc What do you want to change? Independent Variable Different type of water for plants Temperature Two different brands

Data Keeping information Data/observations How much did it grow? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Procedure Steps to do the experiment Be specific Use time order words Someone should be able to exactly repeat the experiment.

Materials Items you need to do the experiment List size and amounts Someone should know what to gather to do the experiment

Conclusion Outcome of the experiment Was your hypothesis correct? Does it have practical implications? Bibliography/References MUST be included.

This is how the completed science fair display boards should look. TITLE PICTURE OPTIONAL DATA: Graphs,Tables, Charts Hypothesis Variable/Non Variable Problem Materials Procedure Conclusion
