Agenda The European Research Council PI-centric events Israel in the ERC programme

European Research Council The ERC is a scientists-led funding body, supporting research at the highest level of excellence and operating to global standards of best practices Support for frontier research in all fields of science and humanities; Support for individual scientists; No predetermined subjects ( bottom-up); International peer review ERC presence in the research world ( 2009-2016 ): More than 4,500 grantees receiving ERC funding in FP7; To date, 2,600 grantees receiving funding in H2020; 100,000 publications acknowledging ERC support; 166 international prizes and awards to ERC grantees; 6 ERC grantees also Nobel Prize winners.

After 10 years – a success story

The secrets to success The Scientific Council: 22 renowned scientists as decision makers of the scientific funding strategy The evaluators: high-level scientists from all over the world Strict bottom-up approach: no thematic priorities, all disciplines eligible Scientific and financial independence of the grantees The size of the grants: €1.5 million for Starting Grants, €2 million for Consolidator Grants, €2.5 million for Advanced Grants The simplicity of the schemes and procedures Very efficient management by the executive agency (ERCEA)

Background PI-centric events Following the recommendation of the Scientific Council of December 2010, the Grant Management Department developed a series of new services devoted to support Principal Investigators, including these training sessions. These events aim to provide a platform for dialogue and exchange of best practice between the ERC grantees (PIs) and the staff of the ERC, with regard to all stages of the grant implementation (legal, scientific, financial, communication, open access) under FP7 and H2020 programmes. There are also HI-centric events focusing more on administrative and financial details. │ 6

PI Centric events - Objectives Provide grant management/scientific reporting guidance; Increase PIs' awareness of their rights and obligations under ERC grants; Provide the PIs with a dedicated space for dialogue and sharing experiences among each other and with the ERCEA staff; Provide best practice examples in all areas of grant management and raise awareness of errors to avoid; Provide an interactive forum for questions & answers on specific situations; Allow for feedback on how the agency can improve its procedures and services.

Distribution - per year and country 26 one day workshops to date: 5 of them multi-country (AT, BE, GR, SE, UK) Increasing demand to organise outreach events Coverage: ca. 250 PIs benefited from training in 2016 ca. 1950 PIs benefited from training since 2010 (>27% of all grantees) │ 8

A strong relationship with Israel Professor Daniel Dolev, Professor at the School of Engineering and Computer Science of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was a member of the Scientific Council from 2011 to 2014. Israel hosted a Scientific Council plenary meeting in 2009. Israeli experts participate regularly in ERC scientific evaluation panels: 156 participations from 2007 to 2015.

Outstanding success rate Researchers based in Israel have the second highest success rate (18%) after researchers based in Switzerland.
