Canada on the World Stage Answer Key Canada on the World Stage

1)area (km2) a) Canada is the __2nd__largest country in the world in area with __9 992 000 __km2 b) Who is larger?___Russia_____with ___17 705 000____ km2

2) population a) Canada’s population ranks __37_th in the world. Only ___1___ out of every 200 people in the world is Canadian. Currently we are ranked 35th with 34,300,083 as of July 2012 Canada's Population Clock

3) population density a) Define population density relationship between the area and population of a country . It can be calculated by dividing the country’s population by its area. b) Calculate Canada’s population density below 31 900 000 people / 9 992 000 km2 = 3.2 people per km2 As of Feb 13/13- 34,300,083/ 9 992 000 km2 = 3.4 ppl/km2 Today 3.58 ppl/km2

c) How does this compare to Greenland? 0.03 people/km2 d) Singapore? 6430 people/ km2 e) The USA? 29 people/ km2 f) So then, how does Canada rank in terms of population density in the world? 206th (see Fig.1-8) Today 220th – as of July 2012

4) wealth a) Define GDP Gross Domestic Product per Capita. = the value of all of the goods and services produced in the country in a year. As such a measure of the size of the entire economy When divided by the countries population, the result is the indication of the country’s wealth.

5) amount of fresh water a) Canada ranks 3rd in the world in terms of fresh water availability. b)A number of experts have suggested that a shortage of fresh water will be the most important factor limiting growth in the 21st century. Do you think that this is going to be a problem for Canada? NO c) Where do you think a MAJOR amount of Canada’s fresh water is stored? glaciers in the North (locked-unavailable)

FYI Canada’s fresh water resources represent 7 percent of the world’s renewable fresh water. About 20 percent of the world’ fresh water is found in Canada, but less than half of it is considered renewable. Most of the fresh water is in the form of fossil water in glaciers, underground aquifers, and lakes/swamps/bogs. The total amount of fresh water is not affected by human uses, which is why it is considered an inexhaustible resource. However, water must be of certain quality and in a particular place to be useful (i.e. to be considered renewable). http://www.canadafaq.ca/how+much+worlds+fresh+wat er+in+canada/ Canada FAQ: How much of the world’s fresh water is in Canada? Accessed Feb 13/13

7) energy usage----need to update from this point a) Canada ranks 3rd in the world in terms of energy use per capita (2001) b) The amount of Energy used in a country is usually an indicator of the level of economic development in the country, however what are some negative impacts of using TOO much energy? pollution (air, water, noise), nuclear waste, acid rain etc c) In what way does Manitoba get most of its energy? (hint: you can’t live without it and your body is made up of approx. 70% of it) hydro electricity= water! http://www.davidsuzuki.org/publications/downloads/201 0/OECD_Report_Final.pdf
