Ration Before WW2 started Britain imported about 55 million tons of food a year from other countries. When WW2 started most of the food stopped being imported and all ships to England were bombed. Rationing made sure that people got an equal amount of food every week. The government was worried that as food became scarcer prices would rise and poorer people might no be able to afford to eat so that’s why they invented Rationing.

Entertainment A radio was entertainment and also kept people informed about the war. Dancing was one of the most popular hobbies during the war. Ballrooms and church halls were always packed with people dancing. Children did not play computer games. Instead they played board games known as: draughts ; monopoly ; chess ; dominos ; blow football and jacks. Children also went to the Cinema. Television was invented, but very few had one.

Gas masks were never used in the England even though they were handed out Protection During the war there was a thing called the home guard; this is a group of people too old to join the army but still young enough to defend the beach's in case of invasion. Invasion never happened. The RAF was the organisation that handled bombing Germany and defending our countries from bombing by the German air force. The Luftwaffe. Shelters were invented to try and prevent people from getting killed when bombs dropped on Britain and other countries. An air raid siren went off to warn the people that enemy planes were spotted coming. This is a picture of a sea mine it was used to destroy German submarines.

Evacuation Evacuation started on the 1st of September 1939. All children were evacuated to the countryside to avoid being bombed. Most adults weren’t Evacuated because they were needed for the war effort and for working in the factories. In 1940-1941 there were 1.3 million official evacuees. Though many missed there homes many enjoyed the countryside.

Fashion Soldiers wore camouflage uniforms to blend into the environment all soldiers wore different uniforms to match the terrain they were fighting in. In WW2 girls often kept their legs covered up with long skirts and trousers. WW2 boys and men often kept their coats jackets and ties an even in hot weather. This is the fashion which was most popular in the 1940’s .

The Battle of Britain The Battle of Britain is were the Germans sent thousands of planes to Britain to try and destroy the RAF in Britain. The operation was called operation Sealion. The operation started on July 10th 1940. The RAF was almost wiped out but the Battle of Britain ended too soon because the Germans thought they had wiped out the RAF. The Name comes from a speech by the prime minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill. After Germany over run France, he said that “The battle of France is over. The battle of Britain is about to Begin.
