Haskell! A Tribal Nations University. HINU

Why We Attend a Tribal College Mykel Salazar Nataska Rouse Rebecca Panther

KEY FACTS There are more than 30 tribal colleges that serve more than 30,000 students who represent more than 250 tribes from across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Most tribal colleges operate on Indian reservations. Native culture is infused throughout the curriculum. Tribal colleges promote students' self-esteem and cultural identity. Most tribal colleges receive no Indian casino revenue.

Reasons We’re Here Monetary reasons Smaller classrooms Native culture in curriculum Experiencing other indigenous people and their culture Individual accommodations

Nataska Rouse Dad attended when it was a Junior College Majoring in American Indian Studies Plans to attend Nursing School “I believe having a AIS degree will benefit me once I become a nurse because having a degree in American studies will give me the apprenticeship of different cultures.”

Mykel Salazar First to attend a Tribal College Majoring in American Indian Studies Plans to attend Law School “Since I want to go into Tribal Law, attending a Tribal College will give me the tools and network to get me into and through Law School.”

Rebecca Panther Grandparents attended Haskell when it was a Junior College. Also several cousins attended. Thinking about majoring in Business Wants to go to Law School How do you think a tribal college will help you accomplish that? “Because I want to be involved in Indian law in some way, I think that coming from a college where I've been exposed to different tribes will help broaden my outlook about natives and teach me more about the issues involving native americans on reservations.”
