Designing a Sirius Hull2017 Mural Step 2: Plan Mural Ideas In today’s session you will begin to plan your ideas for the Sirius Hull2017 Mural.

Plan Sirius HULL2017 Mural Ideas Our mural will be themed around Hull being a City of Culture and what images represent Hull and Sirius to you. It will also use words and phrases from the poem ‘Bridge for the Living’ by Philip Larkin within the the design of the mural.

‘Bridge for the Living’ by Philip Larkin The poem was written to commemorate the opening of the Humber Bridge in 1981. The poem is read is Hull-born Oscar-nominated acting legend Sir Tom Courtenay who went to our predecessor school Kingston.

Isolate city spread alongside water, Posted with white towers, she keeps her face Half turned to Europe, lonely northern daughter, Holding through centuries her separate place. Behind her domes and cranes enormous skies Of gold and shadows build; a filigree Of wharves and wires, ricks and refineries, Her working skyline wanders to the sea. In her remote three cornered hinterland Long white flowered lanes follow the riverside. The hills bend slowly seaward, plain gulls stand, Sharp fox and brilliant pheasant walk, and wide Wind muscled wheatfields wash round villages, Their churches half submerged in leaf. They lie Drowned in high summer, cartways and cottages, The soft huge haze of ash-blue sea close by. Which words or phrases do you think should be included in the final design? Highlight the words or phrases that paint a picture in your mind of Hull and it’s culture.
