Introduction to Pearson Forward Welcome to Forward! Pearson’s first, fully digital, K through 5 instructional system. Introduction to Pearson Forward

Agenda In this session, we will talk about The philosophy and organization of Forward Program Components

What is Forward? Forward is a fully digital, K-5 instructional system of services, tools and curriculum to help transform the way teaching and learning takes place. Forward provides: A digital, K-5 curriculum focused on thinking and academic success skills In-depth and integrated learning across reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies A learning hub with thousands of select assets from Pearson’s market-leading and classroom-tested programs Built-in Performance-Based Assessments and Content-area Formative Assessments An array of on demand Professional Development offerings Implementation Services Forward is a new way of teaching and learning. Forward is focused on the rigors of the Common Core State Standards, and encourages students to read earlier and help them achieve a better understanding of mathematical practices. Students using Forward also receive a more robust education with an increased focus on science and civic engagement. Forward prepares students for the world of tomorrow and encourages them to be lifelong learners, with a focus on critical thinking, creativity, and academic success skills.   Forward helps teachers balance curriculum planning, classroom management, and student assessment. It provides big-picture overviews of each nine week part, weekly integration guides, small group routines and model plans for each day. Forward takes assessment beyond the “right answer,” helping teachers evaluate students’ critical thinking and reasoning. Forward also provides up to 30 days professional support to guide implementation, in addition to on demand PD.

Program Organization written for the CCSS focus on critical thinking, creative thinking, academic success Forward was written for the CCSS and is organized around core critical thinking, creative thinking and academic success skills. Each grade consists of four Parts, each encompassing nine weeks of instruction. The goal is to teach children to think critically and develop the key habits of mind for college and career. Forward places a high emphasis on balanced literacy, understanding text complexity and mathematical practices.

About Montgomery County Public Schools i3 grant recipient 17th largest school system in the U.S. Highest graduation rate in the nation Winner, 2010 Baldrige National Quality Award   Montgomery County, in cooperation with Pearson, was awarded a development grant under the federal Investing in Innovation (i3) Fund. This fund helps to support the development of Forward’s fully digital, integrated curriculum. • Nearly 1,700 districts, schools, consortia and non-profits applied for the grant and MCPS was one of 49 applicants to win (one of only 11 school districts). • MCPS’ application received a score of 100.39, the 15th highest overall. Baldrige honors companies and organizations that show a rigorous commitment to effectiveness, results, innovation and sustainability.

7 Keys to College Readiness Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) studied high school graduates what % got into college what % made it to junior year   Back-mapped student success beginning in Kindergarten using 7 Keys to College Readiness MCPS studied their high school graduates as they traveled to Higher Education, tracking the percentage of students who were accepted to college and the percentage of students who made it to their junior year. From there, they studied those results to determine the skills that students need to be successful in college and the workplace. They back-mapped student success beginning in Kindergarten using 7 Keys to College Readiness. By back-mapping, MCPS found that successful students were critical thinkers, creative thinkers and had developed academic success skills. Forward incorporates these skills to ensure that a rigorous curriculum can teach as many students as possible.

Integrated Content for Students   Forward does not provide a thematically integrated curriculum, rather two forms of integration are at play within the program: Learning is enhanced with the integration of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies content around core critical thinking, creative thinking, and academic success skills. The goal of this integration is for students to achieve academic success in the 21st century.

Thinking and Academic Success Skills (TASS) Based on the research conducted by MCPS and endorsed by expert consultants, the Thinking and Academic Success Skills (or TASS) are the key skills and habits of mind that students need to be successful in school, college and the workplace. The TASS provide the basis for integration of instruction across subjects.

Scope and Sequence   Each grade consists of four Parts, each encompassing nine weeks of instruction. This Scope & Sequence describes how the TASS should be taught across grade levels. Notice how Analysis and Collaboration are the focus in Part 1 of Kindergarten.

Unifying Questions Build enduring understandings across subject areas

Getting Started Part Overview Integration Guide Planners

Part Overview Here is what the Part 1 Overview for Kindergarten looks like. Each Part provides access to content and assets for nine weeks of instruction and includes: The Unifying Question Curriculum Concepts and Topics Success Skills Teacher Resources Forward is built on the expectation of teacher collaboration. This high-level Scope and Sequence should be used for collaborative planning.

Integration Guide Integration Guides drill-down to the week level, providing an overview of an integrated week of instruction. Here is what an Integration Guide for Kindergarten looks like. The Unifying Question is connected to the Thinking and Academic Success Skills and applies to all five subject areas. The goal of the Unifying Question is to support integration and build understanding across all subjects

Planners Forward provides a library of Sample Learning Tasks rather than one prescribed lesson for each concept or topic. Each sample learning task: - aligns to a unifying question - supports the thinking and academic success skills

Integrated Support for Teachers Select assets from Pearson’s market leading and classroom-tested programs: - enVisionMATH - Reading Street™ - Good Habits Great Readers™ - Interactive Science - myWorld Social Studies - A+RISE® - Pearson Teacher Compass Professional Development Performance-based and Content Area Assessments Here is the second form of integration at play within Forward – Select assets from programs like reading street and envision math are accessible from within the program. Assessment and Professional Development are also available at point-of-use.
