5 Minute Check 1/03/17 What do you think a habitat is? What do you think an environment is? If you were going to describe yourself if one word what would you use? Another name for this is your niche. Today’s Standard: MS-LS2-1 - Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem.

Mars After giving think time, I ask for a few volunteers to share their thoughts, explaining why they believe humans would or would not be able to live on Mars in the near or distant future. This is an image from Mars. Do you think humans will ever be able to live successfully on the planet?

Mars Think about what humans might need to bring or build on Mars in order to make it possible for us to live there. Think about the basic needs of living things and how they would meet these on a faraway planet that’s very different from Earth.

Make a list of things here: After making the list, I ask the students how we could categorize these items, asking questions such as: Which ones are not necessary and can be eliminated? Which needs appear on everyone’s drawing? Why are these items so important?

Habitat You basically have just drawn your own habitat. A habitat is a home, the place where humans get all that they need to survive. Humans, like all animals, require certain habitats that can meet their four basic survival requirements - food, water, shelter, and the ability raise young (this can mean safety, space, and potential mates). Look at your pictures again and circle all of the items that meet these four basic needs.

So what’s the difference between a habitat and an environment?

Environment An environment is all the living and nonliving things in a place. The environment is the surroundings: air, water, plants, and animals. Each kind of environment has many different kinds of animal habitats.

Habitat Every animal has a habitat. The place where an animal or plant lives and grows is called its habitat. A habitat is where an animal finds the food, water, and shelter it needs to live. For example, a toucan’s habitat is the rainforest.

1. Desert Habitats A desert is a very warm place. The air is very hot and dry. There is very little rain. The soil is very sandy. Most animals that live in the desert sleep during the day because it is too hot. They come out at night to eat. Some desert animals burrow in the ground during the day Many plants have thick leaves in the desert to retain water. Most desert animals get their water from the food they eat.

2. Rain Forest Habitats A rain forest is an environment where rain falls almost every day. A rain forest has warm weather year round. A rain forest has millions of plants and animals. Rain forests are located along the equator.

3. Forest Habitats A forest is an environment that gets enough rain and warm temperatures for lots of trees to grow. When the fall arrives, the leaves will turn red, orange, and yellow. Once winter comes, the trees lose their leaves.

4. Tundra Habitats A tundra is an environment that is very cold and windy. It is a treeless area. It is the coldest environment. The land is covered with snow and ice most of the year. Much of the land has ground that is permafrost, permanently frozen. The summers are short.

5. Freshwater Habitats Pond Lake Stream River You might find frogs, ducks, beavers, turtles, dragonflies, and many kinds of fish in a freshwater habitat.

6. Saltwater Habitats Oceans Sharks, starfish, whales, dolphins, lobster, and coral are some of the animals found in the ocean.

Ecosystem An ecosystem is how plants, animals, and nonliving things in an environment effect each other. Every organism has it’s own purpose, and that purpose is called a niche.

Niche A niche is an organism's role (job) in the ecosystem. It includes what it eats, where it lives and what it does. For Example a beaver’s niche Cutting down trees Building a dam to flood an area and make a pond Raising a family of beavers Chewing bark and wood No two species can occupy the same niche, because no two species do the exact same thing for an ecosystem. If they do, or try to, one will do it better and the other will have to change or become extinct.

Let’s review from yesterday A habitat differs from a niche. A habitat is the natural environment where an organism lives. Species can share habitats and resources, but competition occurs when two species use the habitats resources the same way (they have similar niches) A niche is the role a species has in its environment; how it meets its needs for food, shelter, how it survives, how it reproduces.
