1 Oceanic ecosystems

2 Warm up p.70 Watch the following clip. What living things do you see?
What non living things do you see? What types of habitats do you see in the clip? What are the individual animals roles in the ecosystem?

3 What is Ecology? Ecology - the study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment. Ecologist – a scientist who studies ecology

4 Habitat & Niche Habitat is the place a plant or animal lives that provides, food, water & shelter Niche is an organism’s total way of life; it’s role or job

5 Vocab Squares- Habitat and Niche
What is the fish’s habitat ? What is the coral’s niche? Vocab Squares- Habitat and Niche

6 Two Parts of an Ecosystem
Biotic factors ...Twig The living parts of an ecosystem Ex.: plants, animals, fungi, Bio = living; life Abiotic factors...twig The nonliving parts of an ecosystem Ex: water, sunlight, oxygen, temperature, soil A = non; not; without Vocab Squares- biotic and abiotic

7 What are the biotic parts of this environment? The abiotic parts?
Vocab squares: abiotic and biotic

8 Twig What is an ecosystem

9 Levels of Organization
How are things organized in the body???

Atom Molecule Organelle Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism copyright cmassengale 10

11 Then what?

12 Organism Single living thing Can survive on its own 1 Sardine

13 Population A group of individuals of the same species that live together. School of Sardine

14 Community All the different populations of species that live together in an area –or- All of the living things (biotic factors) in an area Sardines + Swordfish + sharks

15 Ecosystems Made up of all the biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors that interact in a particular area. Sardines + Swordfish + sharks + water + sunlight

16 Biome A large region with a similar climate, and specific plant and animal communities that have adapted to that climate Terrestrial (Land) Aquatic (Water) Tropical rainforest Marine (oceans) Savanna/Grassland Freshwater (rivers & lakes) Temperate Forest Estuary Desert Taiga Tundra Mountain

17 Biosphere The part of Earth where life exists
The biosphere includes the top portion of Earth’s crust, all the waters that cover Earth’s surface, and the atmosphere that surrounds Earth.

18 Ecological Organization

19 Levels of organization
Think of San Diego’s ecosystem and create a level of organization starting with an organism.

20 Situation Cards Read the card at your table and talk amongst yourselves about the situation. You are going to switch roles every situation. Each card involves topics we will learn more about as the unit continues.

21 Example situation Pollution has been a huge factor in climate change which is increasing temperatures around the globe. This is in turn causing the Arctic ice to melt. Polar bears use this ice to catch seals. What do you think is going to happen to the polar bear population in the next 20 years?

22 No arctic ice With arctic ice
