Wood Glue & Preserving and Finishing Products Ag Mech I Standards 6:6-8

Gluing Gluing is used solely in wood working and is a sticky liquid used to hold things together It is used in the manufacture of plywood and particleboards and extensively in manufacturing fine furniture

Gluing Glue is used in combination with nails, screws or bolts to provide extra strength There are many kinds of glues Resorcinol, urea, polyvinyl, epoxy, contact cement, casein and animal glues The most common type is aliphatic resin glue often know as Yellow Carpenters Glue

Yellow Carpenters Glue It comes in colors ranging from yellow to tan to brown depending on the brand Forms a very tight durable bond between the wood Comes in various grades according to moisture resistance

Making Glue Joints Glue must be pressed tightly into the pores of the wood to form a string bond Use a vise or wood clamp to tightly squeeze the wood together then leave in clamp until glue dries

Epoxy Epoxy is used in agriculture and mechanics It provides a strong weatherproof bond to several different types of materials like Wood Plastic Ceramic Metal Masonry To name a few

Epoxy Epoxy is made by mixing two parts together Parts are mixed together then applied to material you are fixing Dry time varies depending on product JB Weld is one of the most common epoxys

Glue Joint Aids Dowel Pins Ae used to strengthen glued joints Holes are drilled in the wood dowel pins are drove in coated with glue to add strength to the joint

Doweling Jig Used to align dowel holes on the wood joints Prevents dowel holes from misaligning

Biscuit Newer method to dowels Slots are cut inside the side of the pieces of wood biscuits are coated in glue and placed in the slot then held together by a wood clamp

Biscuit Cutter Machine has dial to select biscuit size and depth gauge to ensure proper cutting depth along with a tape on the front to make sure you are cutting at the correct marked spot

Finishing Materials of Wood 2 basic ways to preserve finish wood Painting Poly finish

Painting Painting is adding a coat of paint to protect the wood from the environment to prevent damage or rot

Finishing Is a chemical layer the protects the surface of the wood To prepare the wood you must sand it down to a smooth finish then remove the dust and debrie

Oil Finish Applied to the wood and gives a semi clear finish that shows the woods natural beauty Most common is linseed oil from flaxseed

Varnish Is a finish composed of a variety of different oils Does not adhere to wood well so a sealer coat must be applied Tends to turn dark and become soft after years of use

Polyurethane Is a clear, durable, water resistant finish Requires no sealer Seals the pores of the wood and is very durable Ideal for wood floors

Lacquer Clear finish that requires its own special thinner Seals wood and provides good protection Have a banana like smell Do not apply over other finishes, it softens them

Shellac One of the oldest clear finishes Used by Romans Comes from the shellac beetle o SE Asia Easy to apply and safe to use Approved by the FDA as a food additive

Wood Stains Used to change color of wood to many shades of black, brown, red, blonde and white Allow grain of wood to show through Used to make cheaper wood look more expensive
