Hard Timber
Stock forms
Hardwood comes from Deciduous trees which loses there leaves in winter.
Timber can be supplied in the following ways:
Wider timber grain
Tend to have a tighter grain.
They can be very Expensive.
Planks
Square sections
Dowel
These are usually quite hard but not always.
They are slower growing trees it can take 100 years to grow fully.
Soft Timber
Moulds
Boards
Sheets
Softwood comes from Coniferous trees which keep there leaves in winter.
Finishes
Oil - Similar effect to varnish but soaks into the timber rather than sitting on the surface, needs reapplying frequently.
They have a looser grain structure.
Closer timber grain
These grow quite faster and so are cheaper.
Stain - Permanently colours wood, does not protect it, results vary depending on bade wood and colour.
These are usually softer and easy to work.
Wood Preservative - Painted on to protect wood from fungal or insect attack and prevent rot and decay, needs reapplication to maintain levels of protection.
They are often used as building material.
The trees grow tall and straight which makes it easier for the manufacturer to cut long straight planks of timber
Wax- Rubbed into the wood with cloth or wire wool, enhances natural grain, needs regular reapplication to stay waterproof.
Manufactured Timber
Manufactured boards are timber sheets which are produced by gluing timber layers or timber fibres together. They tend to be made using waste timber materials (recycling).
Paint- Painted with brush or roller usually needs primer and undercoat on bare wood, wide range of colours available.
Varnish - Protects from moisture, can be coloured with stain, enhances grain, gloss, satin or matt finish, yellows with age.

This logo belongs to the FSC, The Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC promotes the responsible management of forests through sustainable forestry. The FSC has defined high standards of forest conservation and management. Any packaging with the FSC logo has been manufactured with conservation and the environment in mind.

The negative effects of deforestation are:
There will be more CO² in the atmosphere as there will be less trees to photosynthesise.
Animals habitats will be affected as all the trees are removed.
Soil dries out and becomes desert like conditions making the ground useless for growing anything on,
That some companies purposely make the life span of a product less than it should be! So when a product could last us a very long time, sometimes it only lasts us a few years. This is called planned obsolescence.
