European Colonization

What was the “Age of Colonization” During the 1500-1700s when European countries were competing with each other to win control of as much of the Americas as possible.

SPANISH By 1535 Spain claimed and colonized most land Mexico and all of Florida.

FRENCH By the early 1500s France claimed and colonized what is known as Canada and the northeastern United States.

DUTCH By the early 1600s the Dutch claimed and colonized the land along the Hudson River which is known today as New York and New Jersey.

ENGLISH By 1587 England claimed and colonized Roanoke Island which is known today as Virginia. 13 more colonies followed.

What was the relationship between the settlers and the Natives in these colonies? New Spain Spanish settlers forced the natives to live on missions Forced the natives to work on crops and in gold and silver mines Forced natives into slavery Many natives died of hunger and diseases

New France French missionaries converted natives to the Catholic religion French fur traders lived with natives and were strong trading partners French settlers were allies with the Huron and helped them fight against the Iroquois

New Netherland The Dutch had a strong fur trading relationship with the Algonquin; however, in time the two began fighting over land The Dutch were allies with the Iroquois and help fight the Huron

New England English settlers fought with the Powhatan until Pocahontas helped bring about a short time of peace and a good trading relationship There were years of fighting with the Powhatan over land called the “Powhatan Wars”
