Body Planes, Cavities, Quadrants, and Directional terms Kline Anatomy

Body Planes Sagittal section – a cut along the lengthwise plane of the body, dividing the body into right and left halves Also called longitudinal If the cut is even on both sides, it is called a median, or midsagittal section.

Body Planes Frontal Section – a lengthwise cut dividing the body into anterior and posterior parts Also called coronal

Body Planes Transverse Section – is a cut along a horizontal plane dividing the body into superior and inferior parts Also called a cross section

Body Cavities

Dorsal Cavity Cranial Cavity – contains brain, protected by skull Spinal Cavity – contains spinal cord, protected by vertebrae

Ventral Cavity Thoracic Cavity – contains heart and lungs, protected by rib cage Mediastinum separates the lungs into right and left cavities

Ventral Cavity Abdominopelvic Cavity contains: Abdominal cavity – contains stomach, liver, intestines Pelvic Cavity – contains reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum

Quadrants
