Middle Years Programme The Next Chapter

Agenda Review of Basics Mission Statement Fundamental Concepts IB Learner Profile Areas of Interaction

IB Mission Statement The IBO aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Review/Read IB Mission Statement

Mission Statement Activity Ones and twos: Circle the three most important words in the statement. Ones: Share those words. Twos: develop rationale for 1 of the words identified.

Fundamental Concepts Why Learn the Fundamental Concepts? If you can increase these three concepts in your instruction, you are doing MYP!

Three Fundamental Concepts Intercultural Awareness Holistic Learning Communication Communities should encourage and promote international-mindedness by engaging with and exploring other cultures Builds understanding and respect Encourages students to see issues from multiple perspectives. All knowledge is interrelated Links between subject areas (i.e., Areas of Interaction) Curriculum should cater to the development of the whole person (i.e., IB Learner Profile) Stresses good command of verbal and non-verbal communication A good communicator in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication Discuss international-mindedness, respecting others with differences, and being flexible to other perspectives on issues. Discuss how all learning is connected through all subjects. Discuss the importance of being a good communicator.

3 Fundamental Concepts Activity At your table, develop a Frayer Map for one of the fundamental concepts.

Fundamental Concept Frayer Map Define in your own words How you already incorporate this OR How will you incorporate this? Fundamental Concept What does this look like, sound like, feel like? What is it not? (non examples) Students work on Frayer Map

3 Fundamental Concepts Activity Intercultural Awareness Holistic Learning Communication 3-4 ways your classroom or the school addresses 1. 2. 3. 4. 3-4 ways your classroom or the school could increase attention
