Energy
Energy can be broken up into 6 types
Mechanical Energy Energy an object has because of its motion or position
Thermal (or Heat) Energy Energy a substance has based on the movement of its particles
Electromagnetic Energy Energy carried by electromagnetic waves (light, x-rays, radio waves, etc.)
Electrical Energy Energy produced by the flow of electric charges
Chemical Energy Energy stored in chemical bonds
Nuclear Energy Energy contained within the nucleus of an atom
These types can be broken into 2 Forms
Potential Energy: Stored energy an object could potentially have Kinetic Energy: Energy an object has because it is moving
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but only transferred from one type or system to another
Taking a closer look at some of those types of energy…
Thermal (or Heat) Energy Temperature: a measure of how fast the particles are moving in a substance What is temperature measured in? Heat: the transfer of thermal energy between substances at different temperatures
Energy Transfer Hot Cold Temperature naturally wants to equalize Heat will flow from warmer to cooler objects until temperatures are equal Hot Cold
