Parent Night Mrs. Hernandez 3rd Grade

What is the Florida State Assessment? A test that was designed to serve Florida students by measuring education gains and progress. The FSA will show whether or not a student is mastering the new standards. Information from the assessment is used to drive student instruction. Students are no longer taking the FCAT.

How will the test affect my child? The FSA exam is ONE of the 4 opportunities for promotion to fourth grade. 3rd Grade is a pass or fail year. There are four opportunities that your child has for promotion to the next grade level. -FSA -Portfolio – series of reading passages with benchmarks to be met -ASRA – taken the last week of school after a miniboot camp -SAT?? – taken at the end of summer school **Summer School will be mandatory for students that do not pass the FSA. Failure to participate will effect enrollment for the upcoming school year.**

What will the FSA look like for my child? English Language Arts and Listening 2 Test Days March 27-31st 2 Test Sessions 80 minutes each session Session 1: 28 items Session 2: 31 items Mathematics April 10, 2017 Session 1: 32 items Four total test days. Recommend that students are here ON TIME each test day. Make up days are available, but students will be testing in an unknown setting, with an unknown proctor. Tests are broken up into two sessions each and are TIMED. Unless the student is ESOL levels 1-4) in which they will have extended time. Other students may receive accommodations on a case by case basis.

How will the FSA affect my child? 4th Grade Promotion Must receive a Level 2 (or higher to pass) Pass the FSA Administered during the 3rd semester All 3rd grade students will complete portfolio Administered in a span of several weeks. Student must demonstrate mastery of each benchmark Portfolio Administered the last 2 weeks of school Participants: Students scoring a Level 1 on the FSA Students without a passing reading portfolio ASRA If a student does not show mastery of third grade content, as demonstrated by scoring a level 2 on the Reading FSA in Third Grade, the student will be retained.

If a student’s reading deficiency is not remedied by the end of third grade, as demonstrated by scoring at level 2 on the FSA in reading for grade 3 the student must be retained. Exemptions Portfolio- Administered during the 2nd semester All 3rd grade students will complete portfolio Administered in a span of several weeks. Students will complete one passage each week. Is the 2nd opportunity for a student to be promoted to grade 4 Student must demonstrate mastery of each benchmark ASRA- Administered the last 2 weeks of school Participants Students scoring a level 1 Students without a passing reading portfolio Represents the 3rd opportunity within the school year prior to retention

Will my child receive any accommodations? Students that are ESOL Levels I, II, III, or IV receive extended time. Other students may receive accommodations on a case by case basis.

How are we helping your child? FSA Tutoring program-Reading and Math Technology-computer lab two hours a week, an hour for math and an hour for reading i-ready. Small Group Instruction Students have a lot of modeling, and sharing activities. Students use RACE writing strategies and math strategies.

How can I prepare my child for the FSA? Use Technology! Do I-READY and reflex math. Read together EVERY night. Use FSA Task Cards. Ask you child questions. Make sure your child is using TEXT EVIDENCE. Review multiplication and division tables. -Reading and comprehension questions can be in English OR Spanish. Use technology to help reinforce skills being taught in the classroom. Read with your child EVERY night, at least 20-30 min. Use the FSA Task cards to ask them questions about what is being read. Ask your child questions about what he or she is learning in class. Make sure you child is going back into the text to answer reading comprehension questions. Review the TIMES TABLES and DIVISION TABLES daily. You can practice in the car, at breakfast, at the store.

Additional recommendations… Students should be completing their technology assignments daily. In order to show growth on i- ready students should be completing 70 minutes of i-ready for reading and math weekly (35 minutes a session).

The Night Before the FSA? What do I do… The Night Before the FSA? Remind your child they are smart and will do great. Make sure your child gets enough sleep. The Morning of the FSA? Eat a normal breakfast. Talk to your child. Arrive at school early. Be positive.
