Ethiopia Country Profile Population (est.): 82 million - Annual population growth rate (est.): 2.6%. Health: Infant mortality rate--77/1,000 live births. Mortality rate for children under 5—104/1,000 live births Work force: Agriculture--80%. Industry and commerce--20%.
Malaria in Ethiopia 75% of the land is prone to malaria More than 50 million people are at risk for malaria (68% of the population) Malaria is the first and the leading cause of death Estimated Number people living in malaria areas: 50 million Estimated number malaria cases per year: 9 million • Number of extra cases in an epidemic year: 6 million • Number of people dying in a 9-month malaria epidemic (e.g. 2003): 114,000 • Estimated number of lives saved annually if all malaria control interventions fully implemented (Child survival strategy, 2005): 70,400 * Number of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) distributed to families in Ethiopia since 2005: 4.5 million • Total number ITNs needed to reach 100% coverage: 20 million
Problem: Despite recent efforts, it is evident there is still malaria mortality rates in children under 5 in Ethiopia
Mother NetWork Implement Early Prevention and Education to Reduce Childhood Mortality Rates by decreasing Malaria cases in Ethiopia
Intervention and Evaluation Target population: Pregnant women or women with children <5 years old Program goal: To reduce childhood mortality by 10% by the end of the first year of the program Aim 1: Reduce mortality rate due to malaria by 10% by the end of the first year of the program Aim 2: To increase the use of proper nets in intended population by 50% by the end of year 1. Aim 2: Provide education/resources at least 50 individuals of target population about proper utilization of mosquito nets Aim 3: Provide additionally resources (community assets) to intervention participants through this intervention by the end of the first year of the program
Early Prevention Reiterate the importance of properly using ITNs (nets) Video Informational handouts (with pictures) Community involvement (e.g., churches, community leaders, hospitals) in obtaining ITNs
