Texas Republic Unit 6 Review

During the era of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston, Mirabeau B During the era of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston, Mirabeau B. Lamar and Anson jones served as President

Sam Houston – Oct 1836 to Dec 1838 & Dec 1841 to Dec 1844 Mirabeau B. Lamar – Dec 1838 to Dec 1841 Anson Jones – Dec 1844 to Dec 1846

In 1845, Texas was annexed into the United States

The Battle of Plum Creek was caused by the Council House fight and other issue filled events.

During Lamar’s presidency, he sent his troops on an expedition even though congress did not agree to it. They tried to bring in outside settlers from another territory but find that they cant because of imprisonment. This expedition was the Santa Fe expedition.

Many skirmishes broke out between Texans and natives Many skirmishes broke out between Texans and natives. This caused a meeting to discuss peace. The natives did not hold their end of the bargain, so the Texans attacked the Comanche leaders. This event was called the Council House fight.

During Sam Houston’s presidency, he tried to keep government spending low, he pushed to annex to the United States, and he tried his hardest to keep conflict between Texas and Mexico to a minimum.

A big problem with Mexico was that Mexico refuse to recognize Texas’s independence

During the first presidential election in Texas, not only did they vote for their first president but they also voted to annex to the United States

At first Texas failed to annex because Texas was a slave state

During the Mier expedition, many Anglos were captured by Mexican troops and were forced to pick a black or white bean. Those who picked a black bean died, and those who picked a white bean were exempted from execution.

In efforts to pay of the Republics debt, Sam Houston disbanded the Texas navy, Court martial of Edwin Moore, and selling of all ships.

The annexation of Texas was likely during Houston’s second term in office because the new president and secretary of state were from the south and Texas being a slave state did not bother them.

Lamar’s view on the natives were harsh; he wanted them all dead or out of the state.

While Lamar was in office, his biggest contribution to the republic was efforts to better education

“If peace can only be attempted by the sword, then let the sword do its work.” This is a quote from Mirabeau B. Lamar

“I shall feel the blood of our martyred heroes had been shed in vain “I shall feel the blood of our martyred heroes had been shed in vain.” Another quote from Lamar. He felt that Texas did not need to join the United States, and argued that those who died for Texas would not want to see it become a state.

Some qualities that reflect Sam Houston’s leadership skills is his determination to get his thoughts out and upheld. He also showed caution in finances when it came to spending.

Lamar’s interpretation of the Treaty of Velasco was that the Texas Border followed the Rio Grande into Colorado

The two biggest factors in the annexation of Texas were that between slave and free states, it work be unbalanced and that bringing in Texas could lead to possible problems with Mexico regarding international borders.

Game Time!!! You have one minute to split into groups of 3. We will then have a little competition to see who can get the most answers right. You will have 15 seconds to discuss within your group and then an answer must be presented. If your answer is incorrect or time runs out then the next group can steal.

The annexation of Texas was likely during Houston’s second term in office because the new president and secretary of state were old friends of Houstons.

During the era of the Texas Revolution Sam Houston, Mirabeau B During the era of the Texas Revolution Sam Houston, Mirabeau B. Lamar and Anson jones served as President
