1. Texans supported annexation because: a. Most were from the U.S. b. They wanted U.S. protection c. They wanted to use the U.S. Postal System d. They wanted the strong monetary system of the United States

2. Obstacles to annexation were: a. Mexico refused to recognize Texas as an independent country b. Texans owned slaves 3. Problems of the new Independent Texas were: a. Increased Indian raids on settlers b. $1.25 million debt from the Texas Revolution

4 Notes – Lamar 4. Mirabeau B. Lamar – Commander of the Texas cavalry at San Jacinto and elected President of Texas in 1838. a. Navy – He made the Texas Navy stronger by buying more ships and putting Texas deeper into debt. b. Indians – He hated the Indians and sent men out to kill them on campaigns. c. Debt – He contributed $2.5 million to the debt and tried to get rid of the debt by printing more money known as redbacks. d. Annexation – He was against Texas joining the U.S. as a state and believed that Texas could become powerful on its own.

5 Notes – Houston 5. Sam Houston – He was President of Texas in 1836 and again in 1841. a. Navy – He docked the ships of the Texas Navy and tried to sell the ones that Lamar had bought. b. Indians – He tried to renew peace with the Indians and had several peace treaties signed that made peace for years. c. Debt – To get rid of the debt, Houston reduced government spending by reducing govt. salaries and cutting down the size of the Texas Army. d. Annexation – He supported Texas becoming part of the United States.
