4. Mirabeau B. Lamar – Commander of the Texas cavalry at San Jacinto and elected President of Texas in 1838.
a. Navy – He made the Texas Navy stronger by buying more ships and putting Texas deeper into debt.
b. Indians – He hated the Indians and sent men out to kill them on campaigns.
c. Debt – He contributed $2.5 million to the debt and tried to get rid of the debt by printing more money known as redbacks.
d. Annexation – He was against Texas joining the U.S. as a state and believed that Texas could become powerful on its own.

5. Sam Houston – He was President of Texas in 1836 and again in 1841.
