How An Airplane Flies by Fernando Salas PBL

1. Parts of Airplanes 2.Control Surfaces 3.How a Wing Works 4.Forces

Parts of An Airplane

Right Aileron Elevator Wing Horizontal Stabilizer Rudder Spinner Fuselage Left Aileron

Control Surfaces

Located in the wing, the AILERON are controlled with a control stick and are used to control the ROLL movement. Right Aileron Left Aileron

The RUDDER is found in the vertical stabilizer. It is controlled with rudder peddles . The rudder controls the YAW movement of the plane. Rudder

Built into the horizontal stabilizer on the tail the control stick also controls the ELEVATORS. The elevator controls the PITCH movement of the airplane. Elevator

How A Wing Works

A wing works by air rushing over and under the wing A wing works by air rushing over and under the wing. The air that flows over the top has a longer distance to travel than the air going under the wing, therefore, the air moving over the top has less pressure than air moving past the bottom. Higher air pressure under the wing lifts or pushes up against the wing and creates lift. LIFT Low Pressure Airfoil Wing High Pressure

FORCES

Airplanes are hard to keep flying because they are heavier than air Airplanes are hard to keep flying because they are heavier than air. A force is something that starts or stops an object from moving or that changes the objects direction. LIFT DRAG THRUST GRAVITY

LIFT LIFT COMES FROM THE ACTION OF A WING MOVING THROUGH AIR AND MAKES LIFT. LIFT

GRAVITY THE WEIGHT OR MASS OF THE AIR PLANE IS PULLED TOWARD THE EARTH BY GRAVITY. GRAVITY

THRUST THRUST ALLOWS A PLANE TO FLY. THIS FORCE IS SUPPLIED BY THE ENGINE AS IT PULLS THE WINGS THOUGH THE AIR. THRUST

DRAG THE AIRPLANE PUSHES AGAINST THE AIR CAUSING FRICTION AND DRAG. THIS FORCE TRIES TO SLOW DOWN THE AIRPLANE. DRAG

CONCLUSION After watching my slide show you should understand how an airplane works. You should know the parts of an airplane like the wings, the Ailerons ,the Horizontal Stabilizer, the vertical stabilizer ,the fuselage ,the spinner ,and the propeller. You should also know the Control surfaces like the Rudder, the Elevators, and the Ailerons. Furthermore, you should know how a wing works. A wing works by air rushing over and under the wing air passing over the wing has a longer distance to travel therefore pressure is lower on the top of the wing and that gives it lift. Lastly, you should know the Forces of an airplane. The forces are Lift, Drag ,Thrust, and gravity. And that’s how an airplane flies
