Consequences of Rebellion Numbers They had committed themselves to be obedient to the Lord’s commands (Exodus 19:8; 24:3,7). God’s attributes are in perfect balance and harmony. Perfect love demands perfect justice

Overview of Numbers Purging the 1st Generation in the Wilderness (1-21) Prophecies and Peril of Balaam (22-25) Preparation of the 2nd Generation (26- 36) The censuses gives Numbers its name Change in population after 40 years - 0.3 %

Duties of Levites Numbers 3 & 4 Moses, Aaron & sons – High Priests, set up & take down Tent of Meeting Kohathites - moved the Tent of Meeting and the Holy Objects Gershonites moved all the curtains Merarites moved the boards, pillars, sockets, pegs and cords

Laws concerning defilement (5:1-1) Law & test for dealing with a jealous husband (5:12-31) Laws concerning Nazirites (6:1-21) Details of the offerings made for the dedication of the Tabernacle (7:1-89) Cleansing of the Levites for service (8:5-26)

They celebrated their first Passover in the Wilderness When the cloud moved, they moved. When the cloud stayed, they stayed.

Wilderness Wanderings To Taberah - Numbers 10:11-11:3 Resumed journey after 11 months at Sinai After 3 days, they were grumbling about the hardships The LORD consumed some by fire

Wilderness Wanderings Kibroth-hattaavah (Numbers 11:4-35) The greedy complained about the foods they missed & their loathing of manna Moses recognized his own inadequacy 70 elders gathered to help They would have quail for 30 days

Wilderness Wanderings Kibroth-hattaavah (Numbers 11:4-35) Moses’ interest was the LORD’s glory, not his own prestige (11:24-30) The quail were 3 ft. deep A severe plague killed the greedy

Wilderness Wanderings To Hazeroth - (Numbers 11:35-16) Miriam & Aaron murmured against Moses because of his Cushite wife Moses was more humble than anyone else living at that time The LORD struck Miriam with leprosy

Grumbling produces division Grumbling rises out of selfishness The cure for grumbling is contentment in God’s provision & seeking His will and glory instead of your own.

Wilderness Wandering To Kadesh-Barnea (Numbers 12:16-14:45) Paran

Wilderness Wandering To Kadesh-Barnea (Numbers 12:16-14:45) Wilderness of Zin Paran

Wilderness Wandering To Kadesh-Barnea (Numbers 12:16-14:45) 12 spies sent into the land for 40 days It was a land of “milk & honey” – proved by the fruit the brought back Caleb encouraged them to go up 10 spies were afraid of the strength of the people of the land & discouraged the people

Wilderness Wandering To Kadesh-Barnea (Numbers 12:16-14:45) Joshua & Caleb believed the LORD and argued against the rebellion and to go take the land They were threatened with stoning Moses cited the LORD’s attributes in interceding for them.

Wilderness Wandering They would wander in the wilderness for forty years. All those 20 & older would die before ever seeing the promised land

Wilderness Wandering To Kadesh-Barnea (Numbers 12:16-14:45) The exceptions were Joshua & Caleb Christians are to make their decisions based on the Scriptures & not the majority opinion of others

Wilderness Wanderings In the Wilderness - Numbers 15-19 The man who gathered on the Sabbath was stoned (15:32-36) Korah & some of his relatives accused Moses & Aaron of exalting themselves The LORD choose Moses & Aaron in His test of them all

Wilderness Wanderings In the Wilderness - Numbers 15-19 Korah & those with him were swallowed by the ground The other 250 were consumed by fire from their incense pans The people blamed Moses for the deaths caused by their own rebellion

Wilderness Wanderings In the Wilderness - Numbers 15-19 God sent a plague that killed 14,700, but it was stayed by Aaron’s incense offering. Be wary of those who exalt themselves and those who falsely blame others. Only Aaron’s rod sprouted – it also budded, flowered & had ripe fruit

Wilderness Wanderings Return to Kadesh-Barnea (Numbers 20) Miriam died & was buried there They grumbled again about water and food Moses did not obey the LORD. Instead of speaking to the rock, he struck it to get water – yet God still provided water Moses would not enter the land.

Wilderness Wanderings To Mount Hor & around Edom (Numbers 20:22-21:3) Edom would not let them pass Aaron died & was buried at Mt Hor Mt. Hor

Wilderness Wanderings Numbers 21:4-9 The people complained again about lack of water & their loathing of manna The LORD struck them with fiery snakes They would live only if they looked at the bronze serpent John 3:14-15 - only belief in God’s promises through Jesus Christ saves

Wilderness Wanderings To the Plains of Moab (Numbers 21-36) They defeated Sihon, king of Ammon, Og, king of Bashan & the kings of Midian

Wilderness Wanderings To the Plains of Moab (Numbers 21-36) Balaam’s prophecies centered on God’s blessings on Israel (Numbers 22-24) 24,000 died at Peor because they went with the daughters of Moab & sacrificed to their gods.

Conclusions 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 – Learn from their examples and not crave evil things or be idolaters, immoral or grumblers The LORD judges all who sin defiantly. The hope of all is God’s forgiveness for those who repent and blessings for walking in obedience.

Which category to you fit in? Conclusions Some sin defiantly & suffer judgement Some sin and repent & are forgiven Some intercede for those in sin Which category to you fit in?
