Jules T. Allen By: Joshua Humphreys

Biography Jules was born September 13, 1947 in San Francisco California. Today he is 63 years old. Jules education has consisted of an MFA, Photography, MS counseling psychology, BA , And fine arts at City University of New York and Qeensboro Community College. His Influences are Edward Weston, Roy DeCarava, Robert Frank, Manual Alvarez Bravo, Miles Davis, and Duke Ellington. His Work Appears in the New Britain Museum Of Fine Art, The Museum of Fine Art, Over Holland Museum, Studio Museum in Harland, and has received many grants and awards. His style is to show people he ‘ Black experience’ and the African American culture. This means that he wants to show what African Americans are doing both in American and out of America Spreading the culture. He always puts his photos in black and white, I have not seen a photo yet that has not been in black and white. He has also taught two decades.

Photo 1 This photo is sing natural outside lighting. It looks like the lighting is coming from behind where the photographer is standing. This image is very clear and you can tell what everyrything is. The main subject of the photo is the people standing in the Brush. I think what makes this photo interesting is that you are not directly seeing the people but you are seeing them through the brush and twigs. I think that maybe in the picture the people are working or something so this might just be showing that, or possibly it was just a random photo that he decided to take.

Photo 2 This photo is taking outside using the natural lighting. The light must be coming from the right side of the image because you can see how all the shadows lye on the ground. This photo uses lighting well and is very clear. The main focus of this photo is the people coming out with there instruments. I can tell because he makes sure to take the photo when all the people are grouped together. He used the group of people in the band to make that part of the photo stand out and it leads you to the end of the line so in a way it is a leading line. This could also be a rule of thirds depending what your eyes first saw when you saw the photo. This one is interesting because he uses something that you wouldn’t this to be quite this interesting and he makes it interesting.

Photo 3 I assume that this photo is taken inside or under cover with some artificial light or maybe light from outside shining in because it is not a super bright photo. I think this photo is very clear but it does not have very much lighting The main focus of this picture is the boy in the middle of the photo and I can tell because he is the only one looking at the camera so its easy to assume that was the photographers main focus point. This photo used rule of thirds placing the boy off to the right of the photo. I don’t know what the emotion that is giving off is suppose to be but it could be relaxed or concerned since it uses a kid. I picked this photo because it just looked interesting and I didn’t get what they were doing in the photo exactly.

Photo 4 This photo is taken under a tent possibly so I assume it is using the light from the outside that’s casting in or maybe some artificial light. The light is coming from the back and front if he is using some artificial light. I think that the lighting was good cause I can see what everything is and everything is clear. The main subject of this photo is the group of people in the picture and I can tell because the photographer makes the effort to get all of the people in the photo. This photo is using grouping and I can tell because of all the people In the photo. I think that this photo is trying to show how they are all happy, chilling out, and getting along. I chose this picture because I think that it shows the culture and where these people come from In a way.

Photo 5 This photo uses natural light from the outside. The light must be coming from the right because of the way that the shadows in the background are being casted. I think the lighting is good and that Its lighting adds to it. The main subject of this photo is the guy in the center of the photo. I know that he is the focus because he is centered in the photo and is the only thing that really stands out along with the cool lighting. This photo uses cool shadows to its advantage and I think that’s what makes this photo so interesting. This photo maybe is just showing some average person in a cool way, there is not really any feeling about the photo. I picked this photo over another one because of the cool lighting that it had.

Photo 6 This photo is using natural lighting and you cant really tell where the lighting is coming from but I assume somewhere from the right because you can sort of see the shadows being casted in that direction. I think that the lighting is good and doesn’t make the image bad because the image is very clear. The main subject of this photo really depends on the person that is looking at the photo because the first thing that caught my eye was the people to the right under the dunkin donuts sign. This photo uses rule of thirds if you count the group of people off to the right hand side because they are closer to the photographer then anyone else. I don’t think this photo is communicating anything, it is more of a just for fun type of photo. I picked this picture because It was a lot less boring then some of the others that there were to choose from.
