Chapter 2 SI Units part I SI Units

Le Système International d’Unitès The metric system is the international system. Why SI Units and not IS units? Because it comes from the French!

Why do we use the Metric or SI Units? Let us take a quick quiz! How many ounces in a Gallon? How many feet in a mile? How many pounds in a ton? Answers: 128 ounces in a gallon. 5280 feet in a mile. 2000 pounds in a ton.

Now try it in si units! How many milliliters in a liter? How many centimeters in a meter? How many grams in a kilogram? 1000 mL in a L. 100 cm in a m. 1000 g in a kg.

Why Metric? It’s easier! Scientists all over the world have agreed on a single measurement system called Le Système International d’Unités, abbreviated SI. SI has seven base units. Here are 4.

Mass Mass is a measure of the quantity of matter. The SI standard unit for mass is the kilogram. Weight is a measure of the gravitational pull on matter. Mass does not depend on gravity.

Length Length is a measure of distance. The SI standard for length is the meter. The kilometer, km, is used to express longer distances The centimeter, cm, is used to express shorter distances

Derived Units Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object. The derived SI unit is cubic meters, m3 The cubic centimeter, cm3, is often used The liter, L, is a non-SI unit 1 L = 1000 cm3 1 mL = 1 cm3

Derived Units: Units based on combinations of SI units,

Volume and Weight in Pure Water! The unit for weight is gram. One gram of pure water is one milliliter in volume. Therefore: 1 gram of water = 1 mL of water This only works for water!

Density is another derived unit Density is the ratio of mass to volume, or mass divided by volume. The derived SI unit is kilograms per cubic meter, kg/m3 g/cm3 or g/mL are also used Density is a physical property of a substance.

Math!! A sample of aluminum metal has a mass of 8.4 g. The volume of the sample is 3.1 cm3. Calculate the density of aluminum
